Just curious because I work in a factory and I constantly unload trucks usually around 600-900 boxes ranging from 5-50 pounds usually carrying up to 100 pounds or more at a time. I know it's not real exercise but just curious if it would build any muscle at all?

Yes lifting boxes all day long, at the weight you are lifting, there will be some benefits depending on how you are lifting. If you are lifting properly, with the legs you will indeed see improvement in the legs. Yet over time you will most likly platu as your muscle's will get use to the weight, plus rest time is important. As for arms and such, possibly yet not as noticable. I once worked in a oxygn plant closing cylinders after they were filled. Talk about a forearm conditioning.

If you are not creating an "overload" to the muscle, it will simply adapt to the loads it is subjected to on a daily basis. In order to stimulate growth, it must be chanllenged(muscle) with increasing intensity of some sort. And then of course fed and rested.

Starbell is right. I had a job involving heavy lifting and got into great shape, increased strength and endurance, even lost weight. However, the gains were short lived as my body adjusted. It was production work, same thing every day.

I think that unloading the trucks at the retail store that I worked at a year before I started bodybuilding gave me the strenght and endurance that I now use in the gym.
-------------- I will lift my own weight someday!!!!!
Lifted 135lbs on July 1, 2003, I did it!! WOOOO WOOOOOO

I have a similar job. I work in retail and help unload trucks, about 1500-2000 boxes per truck, lifting from 1-100 lbs.. average weight of most boxes is about 15-20lbs. (Truck unload takes about 1-2 hours and the rest of the eight hour shift is spent stocking shelves..) The first couple months I worked there I lost 15 lbs. Shortly after, I gained most of the weight back without gaining the inches back. I lost one or two pants sizes! The job definitely keeps me in shape. :) It's definitely a good workout, but after a while of doing the same thing, you get used to it and will need new challenges to continue getting in better shape.
