I know it makes you exhausted causing you to not be able to get your full potential out, but besides that what are the effects? I ask because I love basketball and everytime I go to the gym I end up wanting to play instead or along with lifting, but know I shouldn't.

cardio before a workout is only really beneficial for those individuals who are quite obese, and need to focus specifically on fat loss first in their fitness regimen.
cardio right after a workout, for a normal individual, also puts them at risk of muscle loss. if you put in a good weights workout, your carb stores are typically depleted. your body will shift to using fat for awhile, and after that may tap into your muscle stores. you want to get nutrients into your system after a resistance workout to start the rebuilding process. if you go onto doing a full cardio regimen, you are limiting your potential for gains, and putting yourself at risk of actually regressing. if you want to do cardio, separate it, say, into a morning and evening thing. weights in the am, cardio in the pm or vice versa. |

I've heard about that also. There's an order in which your body gets its "energy" (carb stores, fat, muscle). Too much exercise could cause your muscle stores to breakdown into energy.

Jimi1105- If you do an hour of weightlifting, and then continue with cardio or another activity after lifting without giving your body time to replenish its glycogen stores, your body will be put into a catabolic state. This basicly means, that since your body has burned most of its energy store of glycogen, it will start to break down muscle as a source of energy from protein. -------------- Your two most important minerals: Iron and Chalk. If you smoke or don’t wear your seatbelt, please don’t tell me the deadlift is dangerous. |

Bropie: you do not use a lot of glycogen for cardio. Your bodys preferd source of energy is always fat. the problem is that to use fat the body needs to use oxygen in the proccess, in which case cardio after a workout is fine on that score because the exercise is aerobic so fat will be used a head of muscle although it will take a moment for the body to get enough oxygen into the blood for the aerobic system to be fully efficiant. we use glycogen during lifting because we are doing short explosive movements and there is no time for the body to prepare, as I said erlier it takes a short while for the oxygen required for fat burning to be present in the blood stream so glycogen is used only untill the heart and lungs can get fired up. but it is still not good to do cardio post workout because fast recovery is the key to building muscle and there are important proccess needed for recovery that can only take place while the body is at rest and directly post workout is a critical time for recovery and replenishment.

Hey all,
New here, and I was kinda wondering the same thing. I always do cardio before I do weights. The cardio is what gets me 'in the mood' to lift. It's nothing major, just about 20 to 30 minutes of treadmill. I can't imagine that anything that gets the blood and oxygen moving in your body would be a bad thing. In fact, I've been concerned about it since I started llurking around here, so I tried the weights without the cardio....Big Mistake (for me anyway). For one, the energy just wasn't there, and the next day I was so sore! It wasn't good sore either, but more my joints; knees, ankles, wrists, elbows. Jim |

O.K. I am proud to say that, with diet, CARDIO and weights, My tryglycerides (blood fat) dropped from 1529 to 76 in 6 weeks. My blood sugar has dropped from an average of 382 to 166. My energy level and stamina are rising and I feel 20 years younger than my 59 years. I am convinced had I remained in the shape I was in I would have died before my time. I can't explain how hard it was for me to go to the gym and take those aerobics classes ( to warm up) and work out with weights. I would sit in my truck and try to justify NOT going in. But I had reason to go... self preservation. Now with the results that I am seeing I want to go every day. KEEP GOING! IT DOES WORK! JERRY

Is this cardio/weight problem specific to men trying to build muscle or does that include women trying to lose weight and tone up. I have to do cardio before lifting it pumps me up to lift. Besides, after lifting I am ready to go home. I actually tried lifting first and ended up stopping my cardio early because I ran out of energy. I just wasn't as in to it after I lifted.

I like doing a nice simple 10 minute jog before beginning to lift, My muscles are warmed up, I've broken into a minor sweat. I dunno I can't imagine it's helpful or harmful, just tradition I guess.
