So, one of my goals is to get my testing done and become a trainer. I plan to do this *after* I get back into shape - kind of like a reward. Well, a couple of my (more chubby than I) girlfriends are trying to get me to do it now. When I say that no one wants a chubby trainer, they all reply "I DO!"
But what do other people think? My first thought is "how can this person train me when they aren't even in shape?" BUT - on the flip side of that, I have thought that about a LOT of skinny trainers too. As we all know, skinny does not equal in shape! Anyway - ideas? Opinions? -------------- ~~~~~~~ROXIE~~~~~~~ http://www.mycoffeegirl.com |

There is this trainer at my gym, he is short and chubby. The first time I saw him I thought to myself "who the hell is this guy training?" Well one day I saw him in action, he is a machine and he knows what he is talking about. I guess he just doesnt apply it to himself, I dont know.-------------- Hec da Rec in full effect. |

You know, when I first started training I had some weight to lose and I would have felt really intimidated going to one of the ripped trainers at the gym; in fact, I didn't really feel comfortable going to the gym at ALL, instead I just worked out at home. Now that I do know what I'm doing I know better than to choose a trainer by appearance, since I've overheard a lot of the lean and ripped trainers at our gym giving some really BAD advice to their clients and I think I'm a pretty good judge of who knows what they're talking about and who doesn't. So either way I wouldn't have been put off by a heavy trainer as long as that trainer showed good judgement AND showed respect for my goals. I like to train for strength and I don't mind adding bulk, I like muscles so I don't want some trainer trying to pigeonhole me just because I'm a tiny woman (I'm 5'1"). Not everyone trains to lose weight or get ripped, there are all kinds of clients, all kinds of goals, so it takes all kinds of trainers.

That's a tough question. Based on first impressions, I'd look to someone that is currently in good shape (or the shape I want to be in) to choose for a personal trainer. But that doesn't necessarily mean they know their stuff or know how to cater to YOUR goals. I've learned that many ripped trainers know how to train pretty much the only way they train themselves.
If you know your stuff then your knowledge will sell itself. I'd say go for it. Plus, if you're continuing to work out anyways members will notice your progress and see for themselves that you know what you're doing. Good luck. |

One of the trainers at my gym has a big butt :)
Not only do I not mind that, but I tend to hunt down her aerobics classes 'cause she knows plenty of great butt exercises and she makes us sweat like crazy. I think you should go for it too, people might connect to you more, seeing that you have the same goals as them and that you are committed to reaching them. -------------- ...snow can wait, I forgot my mittens... |

And quite frankly when does a PT get to work out? If they are worth their salt chances are they have a good stream of clients and don't get the five days a week that they should.
I'm with hec on this one...give me good instruction and I'm with you no matter your shape, weight or athletic ability. |

And no one knows how far on your journey to your best physique you are.
I am 'chubby' in the 'off season' (read 'overeating season' not to be done after next competition). What matters is your knoledge and your people skills. It would suprose you to meet some of the 'top' trainers from the club I worked at, surwe there was one or two Ken doll types who got all the lonely females, btu there are more people who are looking for a less intimidating person, or someone who knows what is like to not have a perfect physique. The other bonus of starting out a little chubby is that the club memebers will watch you as you workout and lose the rest of the weight and then they will want to know how you did it. Just have confidence in your abilities, and if they doubt your skills, give them a free workout and consultation - use it as a learning experience, it gives you practice and it shows people your knowledge applied. Good luck!!! Oh, and make your friends sign up right away and work them hard enough so they get results - word of mouth is the best advertisement. -------------- "To be able to go to the gym and train hard is a joy and a privelege, even though the hard work necessitates driving yourself through considerable discomfort. Savor this privelege and blessing, and revel in it." Stuart McRobert, Beyond Brawn |

Who says the chubby trainer is doing anything wrong? Not everyone goes to the gym to lose weight.

You're totally right JessicaR. I just had to laugh at Kromone's post because though I understand his/her meaning, the words just didn't exactly come out right.
Appearance has absolutely NOTHING to do with knowledge. Some people think I'm smrt and edumacated, but in actureality I'm unsmrt. jokes yo. |

I think you should just go for it. The woman who takes our Saturday morning spin class has a really odd body for a trainer - wide hips, belly, the lot, but man - she kills us every time, and she's right there with us, going hard.-------------- Aaron |

Actually, it's the only picture of just me that I have digitally and I think it's kind of funny. A friend went to Mexico a while back and came back with it for me. So now I wear it whenever I can - they're fun playing golf in.-------------- Aaron |
