The answer is yes. Either one, toning or building, protein is necessary. In either case, you must feed the muscle, either to make it grow, or to maintain it while losing fat so you get that nice lean hard look. In your case, trying to gain, lift heavy, eat 5-7 meals with good complex and fibrous carbs, and at minimum your bodyweight in protein, but even better 1.5 to 2 gr. per lb. of bodyweight in protein distributed evenly with each meal. A couple MRP's are probably in order for you, to add calories and make your required meals if you lead the normal busy life. A shaker bottle and water is all you need here for instant nutrition. Once you find your maintenance calories, then increase by 10% or so every other week till your weight gain is to your satisfaction. As you gain, you will have to readjust your caloric intake.
