I just wanted to say welcome back--TO MY LOVE HANDLES.

Okay what's going on here folks? I've gained like 6 lbs in three weeks, a body fat %, my love handles, and various other jiggles.

in the last three weeks to a month i've made the following changes...
implemented a 10 mile bike ride into my everyday routine.
started using more good fat in the form of PB and olive oil
Started working as a waitress
Changed my workout routine from uppbod/lowerbod to a more divided one
started regularly taking protein shakes
eating more.

why??? I feel like I am going backwards!!

tarab21, are you having your fats with complex carbs? This could be your problem. Also, with splitting your routine, your caloric needs may have changed. If you were for instance doing full body workouts 3 days per week, and cardio also, this is much energy expenditure, and caloric needs are high. If you slpit your workouts up,and are doing say 1-2 bodyparts only, then your caloric needs may have dropped. This is why any time you make a change, one thing at a time is good, so you can monitor the changes and adjust your caloric needs as necessary. But the thing that jumps out at me most is the added fats. Though this is good, do not make peanut butter one of your main sources. Much more sensible to use flax oil and do not mix with complex carbs. Fiber works well here. When I do fats, I have only protein and fiber with them. You are asking for trouble with carbs and fats in the same meals. Make peanut butter sort of more of a treat.

Make these changes, keep your protein up, and monitor your weight for 2 weeks. This will tell you where you need to go with your diet to reach maintenance. From there, you can adjust either way you need to go. Hope this makes sense. One more thing on fats, carbs...carbs are better metabolized earlier in the day, fats later afternoon toward evening as a general rule. I eat my carbs and protein through about 2pm for instance, from there switch to fats and fiber with my protein. You will have to adjust these to your body style.

I know there are some more knowledgeable people on here, but I wonder if you're overtraining, Tara - you are riding 70 miles a week on your bike, right? Plus waitressing. I think the added protein shakes are a positive change. I'll be interested in seeing what the experts have to say. I think bhardy has some good points but looking at your journal I just don't think you're getting too many calories - I would think you'd need more calories to support all the cardio and activity you're doing. I still would say less cardio, more weights, at least 1400 calories - but I'm not sure what results you're going for if you don't want to increase your muscle mass. Are you just hoping to get leaner?

I do think reducing the leg workout could have a lot to do with this, the legs being such a large muscle group. Loss of muscle, skipping meals, and long cardio sessions would all slow your metabolism, also force your body to use muscle for fuel and retain fat. It's a tough call, remember it takes a lot of trial and error to get the right combination for your body so don't worry too much about a few pounds. That's just how you learn. Again I'm interested in seeing some opinions here, good luck Tara!

Bhardy, yeah I forgot about the knee prob and the "enough muscle" thing. Although, even though I whined about muscle, I don't think I changed too much. I still get sore and work pretty hard with weights.

BB1FIT, wow, what a loaded answer. Thanks. YES, I have been eating PB sandwiches like there's no tomorrow. I guess people kept telling me to eat more, eat more fat, etc.. so I sort of thought "what the hell...why not?" bad idea. I may email you with more specific diet questions, would that be alright? I may email you a few sample days and have you give me the pros/cons if you don't mind.

The help is appreciated as always, my love handles say "thanks"

Hey Jessica,
I was writing out my earlier post while you posted your message. Thanks. Well, truth be told, Jessica... I gave a few sample meal days, but the last week to week and a half I have NOT been doing good. I've been eating way too many sandwiches, stuff like low fat waffles with low cal syrup, too much fruit, sneaking pudding mix in my protein shakes and generally about 2000 cals. Even the days before my samples given, I wasn't doing too good. I thought by writing down what I was eating for a while I would get back on tracks. Well I only stayed on track for that little while. I suppose I should continue.

So I eat more cals like everyone says and gain weight. BB1 says reduce my eating a bit. You're absolutely right-trial and error. I think we could all agree that my diet needs to be cleaned up a bit. I'd be lying if I said I was doing perfect. I've never gone all out and eaten donuts or ice cream or anything like that, I just eat too much "health" food, at the wrong times, in the wrong combos, etc...

thanks!

Well, I'm with you Tara, because I'm eating my own words now, upped the cals way too much and now I'm up a few pounds too. LOL It was ice cream! I ate a ton of ice cream for two or three weeks. Now I'm having to cut back to make up for it and I'm wondering if it was really worth it.

Hmm, yes, I think it was. :)

A good maintanance diet for me is around 1700 - I was probably up around 2000 and now I'm down around 14, 1500 to make up for the damage I did! LOL

Something must be going around. I've not been doing to well sticking to my program this month either. I did so well in June and now July has totally sucked. My pants are tight again and that is really depressing. I know what I need to do, I hope that when I get back home it all falls back ito place. (I am in CA right now.)
