Hi Everybody (hi dr. nick),
I've always been a pretty 'slim' (i like that word over skinny or toothpick) guy. I've always been active as well. My question/comment is regarding whether or not I should be using the MassGainers(WeightGainers or whatever they're called) or a lean Whey Protein supplement. I am 23 yrs old and weigh approx 155 lbs. My goal is to increase my total weight to about 175, but of course I want that added weight to be mainly lean muscle. On other little spurts of weight-training I've done before I've taken the lean protein and I definitely do see improvements in my physique, but it seems to take a long time for any significant increase in weight to occur.
My concern is that by taking the Weightgainer I will be increasing my bf% greatly.
I work out about 4 times a week + 3 20+min cardio workouts.
I guess I need to really keep track of all the calories I'm eating but I'm still getting the 5-6 small meals a day routine under control.
I know I'd have to give information regarding my eating routines but I don't really want to write a novel for the my first post.
This site is an amazing information resource! I'm tremendously impressed with the positive and thorough feedback ft's members receive!! Please keep up the good work! I tell everyone I know about this site!
Thanks in advance for any comments/questions/advice!

LOL @ the Dr Nick!
Well, I think you answered the question yourself. No protein, supplement, etc., will do jack for you if your diet isn't in line first. Track your diet for at least several days and see what's missing. Without knowing the specifics, you need to make sure that you are getting enough carbs, proteins, and fats in you if you are going to build mass. Supplements can help "fill in the gaps," but whole food is first and foremost.
Good luck!

Thanks for the reply.
I have a couple more questions.
Approx. what calorie range should I be aiming for? I don't expect a precise answer here as I know it would most likely depend on several factors, but some sort of guideline would be of great help. I'd say I have a fairly high metabolism.
Best times to take Weightgainer? I generally will have a shake post workout (6:30 pm) and 1 later on around 9:30. When I was taking the Lean Protein I could afford (physically) to down 3 of em a day (morning/postworkout/bedtime), but I'm too leary to take so much of the WeightGainer for fear of more fat than I can chew.
here's an example of a daily food routine;
7:20 - 2 poached eggs on whole wheat, milk or OJ
9:45 - 1/2 can tuna on whole wheat + lettuce (light on the mayo) 1 apple
12:00 - usually leftovers from last night's dinner (most often chicken stirfrys, potatoes/chicken, chicken fajitas, pastas, etc..)
2:30 - 1/2 can tuna on whole wheat + lettuce, sometimes an apple
6:30 (weightgainer + creatine) - dinner - something like I had for lunch only more of it.
9:30 (weightgainer)
would it be a better idea to take the weightgainer at breakfast with the eggs instead of overloading at dinner?
would'ya look at that, another novel...
