Weight Gain for Football

I'm trying to bulk up for JV football season. I'm 6'1" and weigh 153 lbs. I've been working out with free weights and am considering protein shakes, but not sure how that would benefit more than just high protein foods. I've noticed some muscle tone from working out but no real increase in size. Any suggestions related to working out and diet would be appreciated.
