DEAR GROUP MEMBER, GET INVOLVED BY ANSWERING THE TOPIC QUESTION / CHALLENGE AS OFTEN AS POSSIBLE.. BE SPECIFIC ABOUT TODAY - STAY ON TRACK & INSPIRE OTHERS!

Instructions: Try to be specific about the topic in regards to TODAY, this is a daily (or as often as possible) check-in

Exercise and basic fitness is really not that complicated. Walking is perhaps the easiest forms of exercise anyone can do. There are really no weather excuses.. we have coats, umbrellas and hats.

So, did you walk today? How far? Where?

I walked to the mailbox today.. the day before about an hour with my wife and boys outside.

I didn't walk today because it makes my wife mad when I try to walk on water in the winter time. We are anchored off of Susie Ebert Island  and in about an hour we will break out the kayak paddles and take a two hour canoe ride. For my Canadian pals the high today will be 65 degrees F with winds out of the SSW at 10 mph and gusts to 29MPH. Small craft advisories are out so we'll have to seriously dig.

Ahh.. snow storm here today :) Wish to trade for a day? No walking for me.. but I will be shovelling the snow so that is cardio enough!

We see snow once a year on average. I don't know anybody who owns a snow shovel but I do my share of earth moving in the garden.

No walking today, the weather turned for the worse but I did do other exercises today instead

I canoed Friday Saturday and Sunday so no walking. Today we were on the road. Tomorrow I have a date with a stump grinder so I'll probably skip walikng again. I think the change up is good. It keeps your body guessing what you'll do to it next.I'll do full body routines tomorrow and Wednesday. I'll also walk Wednesday.

I have mild COPD from years of spraying finishes in my business. Over the last couple of years I've increased my lung function from 74% to 93%. My doctor has reset my appointments from 4 visits a year to once a year. Exercise does work. Now the really interesting thing that I've learned by accident is this. On the treadmill reaching a 90% heart rate for 30 minutes is good cardiac exercise but something that is much overlooked is tha putting the machine on an incline and walking slower at a 70% heart rate actually burns more calories.

Weight lifting builds muscle and muscle actually burns fat!. So use these tidbits with a strictly counted calorie diet and proper balance of carbs, proteins and fats and you have a pretty efficient well rounded  training program.

Walked today, treadmill 15 degree incline. Calorie-o-meter said 750 calories. Good full body workout and I got out of stumping the trees.

I want to rent the stumper for $195. Websight said it would grind down to 16 inches. I looked at the machine and told the renta guy no way. He called his other store and the guy who had run the machine told him it would go 16 inches deep if you dig a hole first. I walked out laughing. Called a tree service. They came with a big towable machine. 10 minutes later the guy knocked on the door and asked for $75. I was happy, got to walk and lift today. I'll til the new part of the garden tomorrow.

Took the dog on a 15 minute walk this morning before breakfast. Later, I hit the track at the park for a full 35 minute walk completing 2 1/2 miles.

Two miles in 30 minutes is a good time. You may enjoy looking at this page.

http://walking.about.com/cs/howtoloseweight/a/howcalburn.htm

It has a great deal of information from calorie burn charts to how to change up a walking routine for maximum benefit. Good job.

CharlieMV,
Thank you for the link. I know that 2 1/2 miles doesn't seem like a lot but I am pretty proud of it. About 5 years ago, my left knee was dislocated. I knew that something was seriously wrong but the first ortho I saw said the pain was all in my head and sent me home. A year later, I could not take the pain anymore and went to get a second opinion. Apparently, when my knee was dislocated, my ACL also was torn and cartilidge had been broken apart. Walking on it for a year did not help. I have had the surgery to repair everything but the ortho could only do so much. The arthiritis will be with me forever. So now, I take my ibuprofen, wrap the brace my doctor has me wear sometimes and hit the pavement. Whatever pain is still there is quickly erased from my mind as the pavement and I commune. I hope to everntually be small enough and have built my leg muscles up enough to run those 2 miles and more. :)

There are benefits to slow walking too. I'm a geezer. I know a lot about pain. I live for swimming in the summer. Talk about no impact.

I did not walk today, however, my kids and I spent about a half hour in the pedal boats at the park today. I have to admit, after about fifteen minutes my thighs began to burn. We had a great time and enjoyed the trip around the pond. It is a beautiful park that includes sea gulls canadian geese, white geese, nutria rats, and ducks of all kinds. It really was a lot of fun.

Last summer I swam over after dark to my neighbors paddle boat with a wrench and removed the blades from the paddle. It was really funny. Actually the boat will move a tiny bit if you paddle really hard. I watched them paddle and paddle the next day and then put the blades on later that night.

Entertainment is all.

walked andv lifted...

I walked  600 calories barefoot on a 15 degree incline treadmill.

I have a pair of bouncing baby 60 lb Cap hex dumbbells arriving today.  I bought my entire set from 5 to 50 lbs in pairs in 5 lb increments for 100 bucks. The 60 lb pair was a buck a pound. So I paid more for 2 dumbbells than I did for 20. The over 50 lb Dumbbells can't be found used. I like dumbbell training because they hit accessory muscles so well.I have a space problem and a folding bench so dumbbells are best for me. I lost 750 lbs of weight and a squat cage in a move a few years back.  I should be able to put off buying a  70 lb pair for 6 months or so. Isn't it crazy to l to get excited about a pair of dumbbells?

I walked 6 miles..

---It's great seeing a fellow walker. Today I'm foregoing the walk and I will empty two pickup loads of cypress mulch with a shovel and spread it in natural areas with a wheel barrow and rake. The cypress smells so good I'd buy it for after shave. For some reason, mosquitoes hate it and stay away. We place it under large trees and creat sitting areas to rest in the heat.

Hi everyone. I just joined yesterday. I love walking. A few months ago I started walking to lose weight but unfortunately I got sciatica and could barely move for 3 weeks. I kept trying to walk though. At first I could only walk to the end of my street, but gradually worked my way up to 5 k once the pain went away. I know try to walk 5 k at least 5 times a week. Last week I walked over 30 k. I have lost 20 lbs since April 30 and I still want to lose another 19. When I don't walk regularly, I find my weight loss stalls. Oh and yes I walked 5.5k yesterday and 5.5k tonight.

Having tech trouble accessing here. 3 days ago (not yet day) = 4 1/4 miles. 2 days ago = 4 miles. Yesterday = 2 miles.

Does doing a walk & run on the treadmill at the gym count?  If it does, I did that.
