After my intial weight loss I have been at a plateau for at least 6 months - 1 year, in which I have done everything I know how to do to jump start it again, but to no avail. So I just started my version of the food pyramid, which is for me: 2-4 friuts, 3-5 veggies, 2-3 dairy products, 6-11 servings of bread, rice, cereal, etc. and 2-3 meat and legumes, oh, plus a small amount of fats/oils/sweets a day. It all comes out to about 1200-1500 calories a day. Can I expect to lose weight with this diet? Along with my usual workouts, of course!:) Would a different diet be better? Thanks so much for the help!

1200-1500 sounds like too little....how much do you weigh?
bread, rice, pasta, cereal are precisely the types of foods you need to avoid.....they are simple carbs which turn easily to fat if you don't use them.....
for fat....you should be eating nuts, virgin olive oil, avacados, fish oil....etc...it doesn't mean this is where you account for junk food...quite the opposite...healthy fats help prevent muscle lose and keep satiety...so use these calories wisely
I would focus on creating caloric deficit with cardio rather than nutrition....1200-1500 is very little...you're messing up your metabolism...
try 8-10 meals/snacks a day spaced about every 2 hours with meals having about twice the calories of a snack...
For carbs eat...yams, sweet potatoes, brown rice, lentil, fibrous carbs(beans), buckwheat, kashi, whole wheat/rye breads......STAY AWAY from white rice, pasta, white bread, cereals,etc....
try to get about bodyweight in protein in grams....or a little mroe since you're dieting....eat all your complex carbs spaced out during the day ...it will be about double the protein intake in grams...try not to eat any type of carbs 2-3 hours before sleep and instead have a cassein protein shake, have cottage cheese or yogurt....or some type of nuts...(walnuts, peanuts, filberts,etc)...rest of calories should be from healthy fats(including fat you eat in a fish, nuts, avacados, virgin olive oil, etc)
like I said, I am not sure how much you weight...but I would think 1800 calories would be more reasonable...and to give yourself the caloric deficit, run, jump rope, ride a bike, swim, play sports, etc....DON'T STARVE YOURSELF......

the pyramid is about to be redone.......time has showed that all those carbs are one of the leading causes of obesty. However how yoru body type reacts tot he food determines how much of what you can eat.
for me......5 -6 serving of meat a day
3-4 servings of veggies
3-4 dairy
3-4-carbs
furit I eat when I can

That's true ...I have heard about it for 2 years now....I wonder when they'll actually formalize it...heh...problem with the pyramid is that they try to generalize the needs of an 'avg' person...which doesn't work very well...because good luck trying to have same system work for 110 lb skinny high school freshman...with very little muscle mass and a 300lb bodybuilder with 5% body fat...I mean even for 2 average people it doesn't work(if we avoid using athletes as examples)...it's useless....just a slight direction towards healthier eating....
I think the plan should be more of types of foods people should eat...and a list with nutritional information.....just basic guidelines....

I've read so much about exercise and diet, that it's hard to decipher what to how much and what to eat. So this is great info! But I have another question, if I were to not know a thing about a certain item that I am going to eat, how can I know if I should eat it or not? Thanks! Oh, also I weigh 140, and am heavier boned.
