I am not sure why, but I seem to stay sore for about 3 or 4 days after a workout. Another weird thing is the soreness doesn't come on until two days after the workout.

Is there something I could be missing in my diet? Or am I not getting enough rest? I supplement glutamine 5g/daily before bed, but that doesn't seem to help.

Try some zma about 30-60 minutes before you go to bed. It speeds up muscle recovery.

My soreness never comes until 2 days later. It is fairly mild and lasts until the 4th day usually. Hope that helps. Oh yeah, it is worse starting back after a week off.

ZMA, thats a good idea. I was taking it before, but I ran out a few weeks back and just been forgetting to pick up more.

The soreness is kind of a pain in the butt because I find myself tiring out quicker and not being able to push as hard as I would like too.

Are you doing a proper Warm up, and Stretch Before and After your Workouts?

If not, then you will want to add this to your workout sessions Asap. If you work out in the evenings the second day should be the worst for Muscle Soreness, and the 3rd it should be almost gone. If you do not do a warm up stretch, Start by doing 10 min of Light Cardio as soon as you get in the Gym, and then Do about 5-10 min of light stretching, this stretching is only to warm you up, not improve flexability, so do not stretch too deep. After you workout, you will be fully warmed up, esp if you do cardio following your workouts, so follow up the workouts with a good 15-20 min of stretching, do a full body stretch Routine, and get a good deep stretch (do not bounce, just hold) hold the stretch's for 1-1.5 min.

Also I am not sure what your Diet is, but look at your Protien intake as another source of this problem.

how much and how often are you traing a body part? might be your bodys way of telling you your doing somthing worng, not eating enough, or need more rest........many variables here....if you don't eat enought or right your body has nothing to rebuild with

I don't think protien intake is an issue. I've got a pretty decent diet I follow and typically get 1+ grams of protien per pound of weight. I was more curious if there was something I could eat to help with recovery.

I usually stretch for 2-3 minutes before starting my routine, and I like to do a warm-up exercise after the stretching which usually intails the muscle groups I plan to workout (pushups for pec/tri, pullups for back/bi, etc).

I think it maybe related to how quickly lactic acid leaves my body. So maybe increasing the amount I stretch could help. I will give it a try and see what happens.

Just try the zma should help it out. I love the feeling of being sore it knows I worked the muscle good. Makes me feel like I've done something right.

Reddy, I think you're right. I used to be a trampoline coach back in the day and I learned that there's really not much sense in stretching cold muscles. Once they're warmed they will stretch further and will increase the bloodflow to the muscles.
Stretching before your workout (post-warmup), during, and AFTER will DEFINITELY help your workouts; both with growing muscle, preventing injury, and recovery.

it's a fact, and yet it still amazes me how many people walk into the gym and go straight into their routine without a second thought. Do people just consider stretching to be wussy, or an unnecessary annoyance?? I guess they're learning the hard way.

How important is warming up? Is it just for muscle soreness prevention or are there other benefits?

Quoting from JustinE22:

It is really to prevent Injury more than to prevent Soreness (at least pre workout). You should do a warm up first, and then stretch, as was mentioned, you need to warm your muscles up first before you stretch. I always hit the Bike for 10 min, and then stretch, and then I'll hit the weights. Post workout Stretching is to help prevent Soreness, and to increase Flexability.

Another thing you can try to prevent muscle soreness is take in a lot of Potassium. I eat at least 2 bannanas a day sometime up to 4. The only time I seem to get sore anymore is if I take off working out for a week or longer.. Good luck in your quest to not be sore anymore... LOL
