I am going to start a 6 session program with a Trainer tonight at 24 Hr. Fitness. Is there anything I should look for, questions I should ask, things they should definitely do to set me up on a program?

You are definitely RIGHT!!! I met him last Sunday, and he did seem genuinely concerned about the things I want, like losing 55 pounds and shaping up. I do not want to enter any beauty pageants, even though my husband keeps saying I should enter Mrs. America when I am done, but I want to be a great gramma for my grandkids and, hopefully, be able to keep up with them for a long time.

Thanks again. I will keep you posted. I really do enjoy exercising, even at my age, I had just gotten away from it, but now I am back.

Hiya Deby! Sounds like a great plan you have!

How did you go about finding a personal trainer? I've looked in the yellow pages and online for one in my area, and I have yet to find anyone at all.

Hi Deby, Good Luck and let us know what happened. Don't be nervous, I remember my first training session...OY vay!
Remember they are NOT there to sell you anything! they are there to evaluate you and train you. He might recomend supplentation. Have fun.

gwindalyn - he is a trainer from the gym I belong to, 24 Hour Fitness.

I am nervous!!! I already drink Whey Protein to be sure to get enough protein, I really would like for him to recommend supplements that would help me. I really want to shape up before my 56th Birthday which is in October.

It's possible and you can do it. Don't forget to take a b4 pic.

Okay, I said I would post again after my training. I had my third session with him last night and I think he is trying to kill me!! Just kidding! The only thing I can say is DO NOT wait until you are 55 years old to get in shape!! I am doing fine, James (my 25 year old trainer) is doing a lot of work on my core strength and I am feeling that. My muscles are sore but I THINK I am seeing progress. He said that he can definitely tell that I am getting stronger, he has increased my reps.

I like to go to the jacuzzi when I have time that usually helps too. Thanks for the encouragement.

Well, at my age you need all of the encouragement you and get. I actually feel pretty young but . . . That is why I have told my 35 year old son, 31 year old daughter-in-law and 32 year old daughter to get into shape NOW!!!

znjynxed-

You can find a trainer by asking at a local gym. Most gyms have trainers on that either work there, or on staff.
2005/04/20, 11:31 PM
First ask around...

Check into the type of certifications they have....

NASM,ACE,ISSA...are top...BS in kinesiology or sports science is even better....

look at them....if it's a young guy....is he in shape? or is he flabby?

How long has he been training?

Ask him how long it will take to see results.....if he gives you an answer 'oh in a week' or some other similar reply...run the other way....

Ask the trainer what's the core of his clients...ie group....or type....athletes? seniors? women? adolescents?

many trainers are very knowledgeable in a particular are but are limited in many others....so it's best to find out who they train....
