Skipping leg workouts?

Hey im new to this whole thing but have been steady working out 3 times a week for about 8 months. I'm 5'11 170lbs, im not trying to gain too much more weight just mainly trying to tone and get wripped. I'd like to stay to working out 3 to 4 times a week but dont want to workout my legs. Basically i like the way my legs are and i play volleyball about 4 times a week and need all the energy in my legs as possible. I get enough leg workout just by constant jumping when im playing all week long. So im wondering how i can break up my work outs, obviously i have to pick certain muscles to train 2 times a week, should i just rotate and do a different muscle 2 times a week each week?

YOu're making a beginners mistake by ignoring leg work....your body will stop responding to the other work you do in the gym because it wants to stay in proportion...just because you jump, doesn't mean you can't jump higher or that your legs are strong...my guess is that your legs are quite weak....if you're afraid of working your legs too hard...then do box squats...also since you're not a bodybuilder dividing your workouts in terms of muscle groups makes little sense...I would instead split your workouts in terms of movements (for your sport) or exercises(squats, deadlifts, pull ups, dips,etc)...also please realize any gains u made with your leg training will disappear a month or so after you stop...so beware...

I understand why you wouldn't want to bulk up in your legs, but I'm astounded that your volleyball coach doesn't encourage some moderate leg work for muscle, energy, and flexibility. Among other things, it can improve your vertical jump.

Find someone who can give you advice on weight training specific to that sport if you want to. There's even a book out called "The Ultimate Guide to Weight Training for Volleyball". Bottom line -- don't ignore the legs.

Don't even waste your money on those ultimate guide books. They are all the same book, with a different title.

If you're a serious athlete...then legs are one of your priorities...because leg training stimulates growth and strength gains in every other body part and training aspect....in volleyball of all sports you need strong legs for the vertical,endurance, etc...by skipping legs you're just showing your ignorance when it comes to correct methods of training...but most of us been through this...so learn, assimilate, and use the new concepts....this site has a lot of resources in both its members and the services it offers....i really suggest you explore both...

My point was that the idea that the idea that weight training and volleyball (or most any other spirt) are somehow incompatible -- simply isn't so.

One of the powerlifters on this board, Gatormade trains one of the top teams in the NCAA for volleyball. He usually puts them on a steady diet of box squats and olympic lifts.
If you ask nicely, he may help you out...
