Hello All,
My overall goal is to be able to run 3 miles with an 8 min/mile pace while also weight training to gain muscle mass.
My questions are:
When to run / weight train and frequency of sessions.
My current routine (not sure if this is the right way)
is to have morning sessions 4 times a week. I start of by running for 30 minutes usually equaling 3 miles then I go to the weights. I have been steadily decreasing my run time to attain my 3 mile goal running time. Then I usually do two major muscle exercises with minor muscle exercises. Work out is about an hour and 15 min.
Another question I have is, I have been doing this only for about 2 weeks or so I have been running much better and have been getting stronger and am wondering I this is the most efficent way to attain my goals?
I realize I can not have a lot of weight gain with my cardio workouts, however I would like to gain some muscle mass. Currently I am a fairly skinny guy (arms and legs skinny, midsection with extra weight) I am 23 5'11 175-80 lbs.
I have no equipment limitations and I will work out as much as needed to attain my goal. The reason for the cardio goal is I am in the military and am looking to cross-train into a job that requires a 3 mile run time
standard. So the is needed. If anyone has ideas to help it would be much appreciated.

I would say unless you are 'gifted', you will find it difficult to acheive both goals simultaneously.
Having no 'equipment limitations' and ability to work out as much as needed is not what will get you the results.
As you state being a 'fairly skinny guy', I would say your chances of gaining much muscle mass while trying to attain your running goals is short sighted at best.
That is being naturally lean anyway, muscle mass is probably a hard thing for you to gain anyway. Adding the running goal will probably nullify any or most any chance you have of muscle gain.

bb1fit,
I understand where you are coming from. I guess my question at this point is there a way to balance the two goals and achieve what I am looking for? I realize that it will take longer for me to have muscle gain but is it possible? At this point I am a fairly decent runner and am very close to my 3 mile goal. So would I be able to maintain my running, say cardio on my off days and weight training for the remaining days and still have muscle gain? Do you have any recommendations on a program / workout sched. I should try? Either way I plan on working out 5-6 times a week I would just like to maximize my energy I?m expending to the most efficient way possible. I appreciate any help and advice you can provide. Thanks.

It is difficult for me to tell you yah or nay..I can only relate what normally will happen by your description of yourself.
I know it is easy to mentally picture that you will gain in both areas. You must remember that adding muscle mass is in itself a difficult process. Being naturally lean just adds to the 'misery'.
You can most definitely try to achieve both, I wish you luck. Isocaloric is probably your best bet diet wise.
