I have been going to the gym for 10 weeks now. I do 3-4 days weights and 30 mins cardio 2 mornings per week and 1 hr cardio on one of my weight days. I have lost fat and look and feel better. I have read somewhere that you should have a weeks rest every so often to shock the body or give it a break. Is this right? Im worried about overtraining but dont want to take a week of if it will hold me back.

Can any one give me some advice please.

If you have been training hard, pushing each workout with heavy weights, a week break will in no way be detrimental. It will be very beneficial. Eat a good diet, and rest, and when going back you should see improved lifts and energy. The first day or 2 back, you may be a bit weaker, but you will advance very quickly beyond where you stopped before the week off. Remember, the muscles can keep up, but there are many other factors, ligaments, joints, tendons, nerve endings, these cannot keep up as well and one reason why you hear of so many ligament inuries, etc. But as mentioned, diet is essential to take full advantage of this week off.

Thanks bb1fit. So as ccbb said. How often should one have a break. I would have thought once every 10-14 weeks.

But hey, im no expert.

I hear if you are training at Maximum intensity, you should take a week break every 8-10 weeks. This is why most of the workout programs are only 8-10 weeks long. This has worked very well for me, and I'm stronger when I come back from a week off.

Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will.

I take a break every 8 weeks... bb1 is right about the first 1-2days coming back and it's true that you will advance beyond where you left off.

I've consistently increase weight in ALL of my exercises after each break (I am currently on wk4 of my 3rd 8wk program).
