well lately after my workouts I have been taking a protein shake ( 135 calories, 31g of protein , 2 g carb ) right afterwards (within thirty minutes). My goal is to build lean muscle but maybe lose a little of the fat aswell. I heard that if you drink a protein shake after a workout, your body will not go into a catabolic state because of no carbs, but it will instead burn body fat as fuel. Is this true?
The protein shake will help prevent catabolism, or slow it down, but you also would benefit from some fast acting carbs to replenish your muscles and cause an insulin spike, which helps shuttle nutrients into the muscles for growth.
Look for the post about pre and postworkout nutrition - it is helpful.
