i read everywhere that you should consume maltodextrin and some protein (preferebly whey isolate) after a workout immediately. My question is will sugar work fine for the carbs, instead of the maltodextrin. What's the GI of sugar compared to maltodextrin?

I would just go with the protien after your work out. Why do you want sugar?

Hi, Well this is a can of worms. The ads in the magazines continue to advise taking in protein while some advise to wait one hour. Some studies show that a growth hormone spikes in your body at the recovery stage of your workout. True but they also say that taking in food immediately would increase insulin uptake and inhibate the natural GH. While some supplements want you to alter the GH. My opinion is that you need to test the studies yourself and try both of these. And most importantly know what your takung and consult a physician before you try something new.

The theory behind the high glycemic carb/protein supp. right after training id due to getting blood sugar levels back up, and using the ensuing insulin spike. Insulin is the most anabolic hormone in the body. the insulin release in theory will drive the nutrients directly into the muscle cells, thus producing a positive nitrogen environment. This practice is/shouild probably be determinate upon your leaness. If you are very lean and trying to gain weight, with no fat issues, then this may be for you. But if your calories are already high, and you have fatty tissue problems anyway, you may want to shy away from this practice.

I was told in bulking up that the most important meal is right after you work out. I'm not dieting anymore, i'm starting a bulking phase. I was thinking of making a shake after my workout consisting of skim milk, whey protein, and sugar. Do u suggest i throw some bananas in there instead of the sugar?

You are right, in fact research shows there may be a 3 hr. window of opportunity immediately post training. You could use any high glycemic carb...what you are after blood sugar rise/insulin release. Grape juice will work well. This would be a good time to throw in your creatine too for maximum uptake. You might try within another hour to hour and a half another high glycemic carb, not as much as sugar, maybe a white potato or white rice, with a fast acting whey. Then your blood sugar should be stablilized the rest of the day with low glycemic carbs. The last thing you want during the day is rising and falling blood sugars. Good luck.
