Just curious this morning I got up to do my deadlift exercises and when I pull I feel like a sharp pain in the middle of my back around the bottom. What is causing this?

Too much weight, bad form, just not doing it right...should not feel any thing just like any other exercise....lighten up the weights and get someone to check your form

Listen if your form is off you have too much weight on. Period. So lower the weight and get your form down. I never went over 135 for almost a year to make sure I had it right.

Ok....Next time around I will see how it feels w/ the bar and do that and add small weight each time. (the bar weights 45 pounds alone)

Regular...Squat down pick up the bar. Squat (dont let the bar hit the ground) and come up. What are some other ways of doing it? I wouldnt mind trying those and how far should I be going down?

When you do deadlifts they should be from a dead point... rest the weight on the floor for like a half second then explode up.

My back is always tight after a good deadlift workout but never in pain. Determine if it is muscular discomfort or pain. If it is just muscular discomfort than that is normal. If it is pain, that is not normal. Just like alot of other guys said, form is highly important. Train with weights that allow you to stick your form on every rep. When your form breaks down then either cut the weight or move onto a new exercise during that workout.

Are you doing anything else to strengthen your low back?

your doing whats called "hang deadlifts" the point of the deadlift is to lift.......dead weight lol hince the name. More than likly your form is good, when your bringing it down you should not use your back( many people do doing hang deadlifts) You almost want the bar to scrap your chins, keep it close .......head up, back straight butt down, drive heals through floor!

If you deadlift properly you will feel it in your back. Just make sure your lower back doesn't round off. A deadlift should be felt mostly in your hamstrings and low back and traps. You should start with your butt higher than when doing a power clean. The bar should be over the toes. When you pull, pull up and back. If you pull properly, the bar will not scrape the shins. These are the finer points of deadlifting.

If the bar does rub your shins then you now fighting with friction as well as gravity.

Each rep should be performed from a "dead" stand still. Control the bar down to the floor, pause and pull. My bet is that you round your back off and that is the reason for spine pain. Make sure your back is always arched or flat when you are pulling. You need to strengthen your trunk. Do weighted abs, back hypers, and reverse hypers. You must strengthen the supporting cast in order to pull your best weight without getting hurt.

In my opinion you should check with a doctor first. You may think that's a bit too cautious, but when I herniated my L4-L5 and sent my L5-S1 bulging after lifting a stupid computer monitor, I will feel the reverberations of that day for the rest of my life. The surgery to have the herniated one removed fixed one pain but added new pains.

Don't make this mistake. Just make sure a doctor tells you it was a muscle twinge and nothing skeletal or disc-related. I'm very serious. Please be careful.
