over-training

If I have gotten to the point where my workouts are no longer effective because of over-training `what would be the best thing for me to do? Should I just taper my workouts down to where they should be instead of making them so intense or should I take a week or so off to let my body make a full recovery and then start a new, safer workout then?

Take some time off... four or five days... then maybe switch the routine up... how long have you been working with same routine?

How do you know you are over trained. Probably just need some diet changes.

I agree with Tim, but depending on what your doing @ the gym is a big question? If all your doing ia a constant 6 mph jog. Then switch it up to weights, Or maybe you hit the platue because you need to switch up your diet? Maybe try and eat 150 calories more a day and see where you go? PERSONALLY I would keep going and switch it up! If you are doing weights... add more weights or add more reps to the particular exercise. stay constant with your days and times. that way its not hard to fall of the "workout wagon"!

What do you mean by "no longer effective"? You may not be so sore in the days after a workout, but this is common to those who have used a workout for some time. Switch your workout to something your muscles aren't used to and you may be surprised.
