How tall are you? That and whether you're a male or female you may not need to loose any weight. Also, how muscular are you? Muscle weighs more than fat, so the scale can be an inacurrate source of your true "fat" weight.
If you really do need to loose fat and not weight, perhaps your body has reached a plateau and you need to kick up the workouts. Also if you're not eating enough to adequately fuel your body while your exercising, your body will go into a "starvation mode" and not allow you give up your stored fat. You'll even end up canabilizing your much needed muscle in the process. And the more muscle you loose, the fewer calories you burn at rest. So, you need to be more specific about what kinds and how much food your eating and how much exercising you're actually doing before anyone else here can help you answer your question as to why you're not loosing weight. |

Sorry hate to do this muscle does not weigh more than fat! Muscle is more dense than fat. Think of it like this which weighs more a pound of feathers or a pound of lead? well they both weigh a pound!! but it takes more feathers to make that pound. Most likely what you are seing is a lateral change from Fat to lean body tissue. As long as the inches are gone who cares if you gained a pound. To truly get down in weight you will have to create a caloric defecit and sacrafice some lean tissue. Good Luck - Mike-------------- I am that which must be feared, worshipped and adored. I thought muscle did weigh more than fat. If muscle is more dense than fat, then muscle must weigh more than fat, just basic physics, the denser the object, the more it weighs volume for volume. ie, 1 cup of muscle will be heavier than 1 cup of fat.

Some muscle will have been made in exercise. So don't fret yet! If gaining weight you are not eating correctly. Stop dieting immedietly and change to a permanant new lifestyle of fitness and nutrition. Diets do not work, but change does. I've recently got back on track again and this is what I'm doing (note I like fish but any small meat)...
Eat 6 or 7 small meals daily- It makes snacking 'normal' like morning 40 grams porridge/ egg, wholemeal bread/ a peice of fruit/ lunch fish salad/ WORKOUT /Chicken or fish sandwich or salad / raw cauliflower & brocolli/ Fruit or veg or nuts ... But I mean a small 7''plate and I occassionally run in the morning(but not lately). I don't limit fruit or veg intake and weight train 4 times weekly but go to gym 6 days a week... I know I would be thin now if I was strict on my food and nutrition. I never felt better till I tried a personal trainer to invent a program. Seriously, when you go to the gym- are you actually aware of what a real good cardio session can do? How high can you get your heart rate? How many calories you are burning? If you are improving or just plodding along? Try four sessions with a trainer to set up a regime and eat seven times with five or more peices of fruit and veg- limit carrot/potatoes/bread and dressings/sugar/jam/honey |

Ok Mr physics lol density does not affect and objects weight! as for your volume theory close but wrong! The resaon that works is because since muscle is more dense you can fit more of it into that cup!! There fore the cup weighs more! They are still both a cup! The more dense an object the less amount of matter it takes to create that pound! Ie it takes more feathers to make a pound than it would lead! So relearn physics

It aslo takes more fat to weigh a pound than it does muscle. Yes one pound of any two things equal one pound, but size-wise, I can be a size 6 and weigh 150lbs or size 12 and weigh 150, depending one how much of that 150lbs is fat or muscle.

mmaibohm - the same volume of muscle will take up less space than fat. That is why we say muscle weighs mor ethan fat. You can lose inches and weigh more. i wore a size 11 when i was 22 at 135 lbs, at age 32 i wore a size 8 at 145 lbs, because i was more muscular.
Women especially playa trading game for quite a while when they begin working out. We loose a little fat but gain some muscle, which means th scale may actually go up. Another thing that happens when you start to work out is that your blood volume increases, so that weighs more, also. Stick with your prgram and you will see results. It is more effective to have your body composition measured by a trainer or to take some photos in a swimsuit every two or three weeks than to weigh yourself. Dieting, per se, rarely works. usually you need to eat more than you think to lose fat. many women go on starvation type diets (less than 1200-1500 calories) and their body freaks out and holds onto, and adds to, their bodyfat because it perceieves famine. Your body is a complex survival system, when you begin to eat right and exercise your body will think it is most likely a seasonal fluke and it will take a while to convince it otherwise. Keep exercising and cut out sugar and as much processed food as you can. eat feresh fruit, vegetables and adequate protein. Drink lots of water. And focus on getting healthier, not what the scale says. Good luck! -------------- "To be able to go to the gym and train hard is a joy and a privelege, even though the hard work necessitates driving yourself through considerable discomfort. Savor this privelege and blessing, and revel in it." Stuart McRobert, Beyond Brawn |

I don't think 5'8 and 150 pounds is overweight, it just depends on how the weight is distributed. You're young and still growing so don't go crazy trying to lose weight.Just eat healthy and do some exercising.Focus on how your clothes fit instead of the scale.

As a 15 yr old guy, I don't think you're going to actually loose any weight at this point in your life; unless you don't eat enough, then you'll just be doing more harm than good. You're still growing, so if anything you should be putting on weight. If you want to get some definition, lift weights, and get a good wieght and exercise routine going and stick to it.
Seriously though, look at what you're eating, how much your eating and decide what you can do to eat healthier. You should be consuming somwhere between 2500-3000 cal. a day (not sure about the specifics ask your doctor) and they should be good clean food. Check out the bodybuilders grocery list on this board for what those foods should be. Take heed of the great advise given throughout this board and things will start working for you. Good luck |
