hey, all, last wednesday, london won the olympic bid 2012, and i live in London. Us winning the bid has made me more into sports and fitness, and i really really wanna compete in the Olympics. I am 14 years old at the moment (so when the olympics come here i'll be about 21). I got 7 years to train, but i am also quite healthy and fit already. I've been doing HIIT cycling for a few weeks now regularly, and im definetly above average when it comes to fitness. Do u think i have enough time? Will i be able to get trained well enough for the olympics in 7 years? And if so, how should i go about doing it? Any advice or info would be great. Thanks]
btw-i want to probably do some sort of running in the olympics - like sprinting or something. But this summer i'm going to try out lots of sports at my local sports centre, like Basketball, tennis and squash. If im good at any of them i may wanna compete in one.

No offense, but even being in physical shape for the olympics doesn't mean you can make it. Take football for example, to be a decent running back that can break some tackles you have to be pretty big and fast. This means a lot of lean muscle and very strong powerful legs. But to compete at higher levels such as in higher division college teams or even the NFL, you have to have other skills, such as spins, jukes, etc. so it's not all physical shape, a lot of it is raw talent.
If you try those sports and you are really good at them(natural talent meaning you beat just about everyone else that you play that is not a professional and is a beginner like you), then yes, maybe you have a future at the olympics, but like I said it's not all fitness, and natural talent is hard to come by. Either way it's very difficult, but if you find yourself in those scenarios, work hard, and we'll all be pulling for you, I'm sure we'd all be very proud to have advised someone enough to send them into the olympics

yo zenkei, no offense taken, but i didnt necessarily say i would do it in a certain sport. I mean, yeah if im brilliant at it, and i got 7 years to train for it, i mite consider it. But, as for running/sprinting, is there much natural talent for that? i mean, it needs plenty of practice, dedication and motivation right?...
anymore advice/info, would be appreciated :)

As far as running and sprinting goes I would pick a less competitive sport, and one that doesn't depend on genetics as much. Ethnicity has such a large part, African Americans on average have far more fast twitch muscle fibers than other races and especially in their legs. That is why you'll almost never see a Caucasian running in the 100 meter dash in the olympics.

But, there have been exceptions....

I'd explore other options if that didn't pertain to you though

I mean look at that one world record set not too long ago in Paris.. 26 mph... to some people that number isn't that large I mean if you can keep up with a car going through a residential area you're pretty much that fast but when you get on the treadmill and start getting up there... good luck...

Why not ask some local sports teams/clubs..? They would have the inside track (ha ha) on who to contact, what sort of training and a timeline for you...
