here's my situation. i am 5'4" and i weigh 180lbs. 45 of it i have gained in the last year and a half. i want to lose it all. i understand that it isn't going to come off over night. but i want to do this the right way and stick with it. i am changing my life. at 28 i'm in awful shape and not getting any younger. what should i do and how should i do it? i can pretty much do anything except run and swim. (running i broke my ankle and swimming, i'm afraid of water)

i want my hips to go away and my stomach. my ass isn't big it just looks it because of my hips. my legs arms and chest need to be toned and defined. i had planned on joining the gym again but i wasn't going to do it until i had lost the weight. someone told me doing cardio would be the biggest factor in losing the weight. but i just read that it isn't. i'm so confused now. i am glad i found this website and i am learning a lot from it. help me...

sometimes joining a gym will add motivation because of the amount of money you are spending on it. Cardio wise you can try the eliptical machines in the gym, and the bikes for alittle lower impact than running. Also don't be afraid of weight training, because the added muscle can really help you to burn the excess fat you have.
good luck.

Hi Kristi,

In this catagory ( general exercise and weight training)there is a thumb tac next to a topic titled cardio questions, posted by bb1fit.

I think this will answer your questions on cardio. Be sure to read it as bb1fit knows what he is talking about. I have taken his advice on several things and he has always been right.

Good Luck,

Leslie

the last gym i went to was owned by a friends uncle so i trusted what he said...now he told me not to build too much muscle because then i would just turn the fat into muscle and be 'bulky' i don't want to be like that. but now that i am reading everything on here it seems just the opposite...that added muscle will help to burn that fat...right?

Well I know he's your friends uncle and all buttttt,

You want muscle it is the most efficent at burning fat. It even does it when you are sleeping.

Hmmm that sounds like a christmas song:laugh:

Anyway, muscle is good no matter what you weigh at the start. Women will not get big, huge muscles or bulky naturally. By the way thats another great post on here, I believe by bb1fit, tho I could be wrong been a bit since I read it.

Try reading in this category also a thumb tac

Is cardio keeping you fat posted by asimmer.

Next topic should be politics and then we could even move on to a more calming topic like religion.

In my (not so humble) opinion, you ARE on a weight training site. This may rustle some feathers but what the heck: by and large, cardio on this site is somewhat considered secondary, for lack of a better word, to lifting or weight training. I'm not saying that is wrong (or right) but it's an approach, one that works, and it makes sense.

You are going to get some incredibly awesome and sound advice here in regards to weight training & diet. There is definitely a lot flying around about cardio here, and on other sites as well. There is A LOT of BS.

The fact of the matter is though that everything is intertwined and somewhat co-dependent (as is diet). One really gets the most out of DOING BOTH. Larger muscles provide more of an engine to burn more energy (via faster, longer, harder) and they look pretty good after the fat starts disappearing.

The stress between the two (cardio and weight training) is because they somewhat compete against one another for your protein and body "fuel".

I started with a lifting program and followed the awesome advice here for about 6 months and a couple months ago shifted my primary fitness focus to running. I did this because I liked the results (read body fat and tone) that I started seeing from the running and was happy with my muscle size.

By declaring an official Shane primary and secondary focus I am able to more easily make fitness decisions (cardio -versus- lifting).

I still lift and weight train 3-4 times a week, but it is to support my running - it's now secondary in my fitness program. Again, most here do it the other way around, and that's perfectly okay.

Your body and how it reacts to the different kinds of fitness approaches exercises is fairly complicated. You are going to reap immense benefits from either focus. Some of it is textbook and some of it is personal.

ANYTHING fitness wise (that doesn't kill you) is better than sedentary and will add quality and length to your life.

fat doesn't turn to muscle. You might gain muscle mass if you are seriously lifting really hard, but for the general toning up high rep weight training workouts, you aren't going to gain significant amounts of bulk muscle mass. The very little muscle mass gain will help to burn the fat though. Your muscle burns fat/calorie storage 24 hours a day, so it can be your key to trim down quickly. Just like leslieherr said though, bb1fit has some good posts out about this, so look around for the stickys he has put up. good luck.

Without steroids, it is VERY difficult for a woman to bulk up in a manly way. Also, as others have pointed out, muscles and fat aren't "swapable" - one doesn't turn to the other. I'm not sure I would take my friends uncle's advice - he's sufficiently discredited himself with those two.

oh no definatley not!! spamalope was just saying it was the only way for a female to 'bulk up' which exactly what i don't want to happen. so don't worry i am not going to use steroids....besides my painter (i work in body shop) is using them and he's going through some pretty nasty stuff right now because of them...

Good stuff.

ksmith, I have read in several places...here and other... that if you're fairly large when you first start weight training your body does have some (limited, but some) to use your fat storage to build muscle. The amount is so insignificant that it's not worth being scared away from weight training. If anything it's a good thing to help you burn off some fat.

Either way any activity is better then no activity. Your heart will thank you!
