Hi everyone I am having a problem with progress. I have been working out for the past year and a half. The problem is I have gained a little more size in my lower half from last year. I am not doing anything different in my workout program that I was doing last year, so I don't understand what is wrong. My husband tells me I should be taking protein powders but I think I will gain weight and muscle if I do.(What do you think) I currently work out 4 days a week, plus I ride my bike 14 km a day 4 days a week weather permit. Do you think riding is better than jogging and if so do you think a standard exercise bike or a recumbent? I know I have a lot of questions but I am just getting so upset about my progress. Thanks for any help

Well, one thing that jumps out at me is your statement that you are "doing nothing different". You need to change things up to keep things moving. The body adapts rapidly to what you do, and adjusts to remain staus quo.

Gaining muscle too is not a bad idea, in fact the best idea. Muscle burns fat moreso and raises your metabolic rate so you burn even more fat even at rest. Build muscle. you will not get bulky if you are worried about that. Many of us try to get bulky and can't!

Kimmy,

Protein affects people in different ways. With me I had exercised for a year and plateaued, then I upped my protein in take lower my Carb slightly and wham! within 6 weeks I my muscles started to pop!.. even developed a six pack. But take into consideration that everyone is different.

To answer your second question, yes biking will bulk up your lower section. My boyfriend who is about 20 lbs overweight has the biggest strong muscular legs .. the reason he is an avid mountain biker! ...but riding is the best for your knees than jogging unless you're on a treadmill which will be alot easier on them.

If you enjoy biking so much but don't want to over develop your leg muscles so much just keep it so that you're spinning and enjoy the aerobic value and not biking in a harder gear that will be activating your leg muscles more.

Good Luck!

What is your diet like? That might also need to be changed.
