I am returning to working out after years of being off, and I want to make sure that I am doing this right so that I maximize the benifits. I am 35 and my weight is 285 lbs. I have reduced my calorie intake to about 1500-1700 a day, and am doing high rep lifting followed by cardio every day. I have been doing this for about two weeks, and aside from some small changes in muscle mass, have yet to see any real results. Am I doing this right?

you definitely need to be eating more! i would venture to say you need to eat 1000 calories more than you're currently eating every day. of course i don't know how tall you are so i can't figure out how many calories your body needs to perform basic functions, but it's probably not less than 2500.

if you're taking in fewer calories than this, your body will think it is starving and will use your muscles for energy instead of burning fat. you don't want to be using your fat burning tissue for fuel if you're trying to lose weight!

what are your goals for lifting? i have seen better results from doing mid-to-low-range reps of heavier weights than doing high reps of lighter weights. if you haven't signed up for a ft program you should give it a try because it is a great place to start over again.

i hope this gives you a point in the right direction, i'm sure some other members will jump in on this one too, but ask as many questions as you need to!

1500 to 1700 does seem low. I am at 365 and loosing weight at 2500 - 3000 calories per day.

Should I start my day at the gym first with my cardio or with my lifting?

if you want to do a light cardio warm up, say 5 minutes on the bike to get your blood flowing and your core temp up, go for it, but don't do your big cardio before you lift. it's very counterproductive.
