This morning my trainer said I should do abs more than just twice a week when I see him. He suggested I alternate, do abs one day obliques the next and abs the following etc. He said abs and calves are the only muslces you can train more than once a week.
I know I won't be able to train them as hard on days I don't have a trainer since I always feel like barfing when I do them. So what do you guys think about training hard 2 days and light 2 to 3 days out of the week? Isn't this too much? |

Abs and calves are like any other muscle. I wouldn't work them every day,as they do NEED a rest. Calves are strong but still need the rest. There are execises you can do that use those muscles, but as secondary work.-------------- "A will finds a way" Ivan Montreal Canada |

Carivan, I agree with you. I challenged my trainer when he made that statement and he insisted on it. I thought well, maybe if I work them out lightly...but, in all reality...I hate doing abs and even working them out lightly makes me feel ill.

Has anyone heard of 'abphobia'...I think I suffer from it.
I hate the feeling of the contraction...it makes me feel sick. It hurts so much; I do all my sets and reps...then, I stop...but, I'm never sore the next day!@# I don't have this problem with any other body part...it must be in my head. |

That's ok...there was one guy who posted he hated drinking plain water...made him sick and that he "couldn't stand the taste." Go figure...-------------- **_Robert_** Pain is temporary; glory is forever! |

One of my friends is like that. She hates water it makes her want to gag but, she can drink tequila like no other!
But at least I do more ab work than she drinks water. Now that is scary! |

I'll have to agree with you. My trainer is great but, he definately isn't the authority in training. I know this because he asked me to give up my peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. I told him he was crazy.
I'll keep him though, I've been getting a lot of compliments from friends and strangers since I've been seeing him. |

it could b your muscles pushing in on your stomach when they crunch together causing you to feel sick.

No Taurie, nothing salacious here. I was just wondering if your friends thought you looked better 'cause you looked better or 'cause you were with that trainer guy. Seriously though, you should not be nauseus from your ab workout. Abs just don't have to be trained that hard. -------------- Living well is the best revenge. Charlie

Yeah, Dave I think so too. I can tell when my wife thinks I'm being sensitive by how often she rolls her eyes at me.-------------- Living well is the best revenge. Charlie

Oh Charlie, I was just playing with you.
And yes, the trainer guy does make a nice accessory. Ha! Doing as few as 8 crunches make me feel ill. I think my muscles pushing in on my stomach makes sense. Thanks logger. |

Ahhh, charlies been lookin at the birth control thread. charlie, did you know that they have a birth control pill for guys? It was first introduce in Europe in 1996...Problem is, it is the size of a golf ball. Yep, you put it in your shoe, and it makes you limp....
Seriously though; my wife experienced the same gut wrenching/puky feeling when doing ab work. She would ride the bike for 20 min., and start her ab work, by the time she got done, she was ill....Took pill, no food intake, exercise...Problems!!!....Took pill with a bagel, or toast, or some kinda gross melba toast crap, then exercised, fixed the problem...Hope it may be that simple for you taurie.. |

I wish it was...I have oatmeal before my workouts except on cardio days when I don't do abs.
I really just think I'm a whiner since, everyone feels there abs contract when they do abs and I'm the only one that finds it unpleasant. I'll have to adopt a new perspective and just accept the feeling of it. Thanks all for the input:) |
