If your trying to build muscle mass then its not a good idea to train any muscle 2 days in a row. Your muscles need time to heal and grow.

If you don't use resistance you can exercise anything you want to anytime you want to. If you use resistance you need to rest the muscles to allow growth. Abs and legs are better able to recover more quickly because they are used all day long and accustomed to more work.

Aim at 3 days a week on abs and 2 on legs if you are using resistance.

your forearms can be trained every day,any muscle can be trained every day,for awhile any hows maybe for a shock treatment to get them growing again,I would experiment and find out for your self the possibilities are endless.

Shoulders always seem to get some sort of workout even if they are of no priority for that particular day. You have to hoist or hold the weight. Heh, try doing that without any shoulder involvement.

u cant do any muscle every day, u can do calves and abs every other day, they also need time to rest as every other muscle, they regenerate faster, because theyre small

You muscles are always working.......to hold you up, to move, to hold you head up etc. So by making them do EXTRA work, like working out they need rest.

You grow when your resting, not when your working out. period

yea ive read and even arnold himself stated that calves and abs can be trained every day, but i would think u would want to rest those muscles, just like any other muscle to give them time to grow.

resistance is kind of a relative term isn't it? what exactly constitutes resistance, is it freeweights, gravity, rubber tubing? it all depends on the strength levels of a person. for instance, a 90 year old grandmother who hasn't been physically active in decades, could possibly hypertrophy with gravity induced resistance. on the other hand, it would become a maintenance program for someone well conditioned.

as for the abs, like any other muscle, if worked daily it has a greater chance of becoming hypertonic and/or hypertrophy. but you can break it up into different sections on different days. ex: mon-lower abs/tue-obliques/wed-upper abs/rotate. if you like working your entire abdominal wall at once here's the progression of exercises: lower abs first, then obliques, then upper abs. this is all based on neurological demand.

lol, good questions.

hypertrophy occurs anytime a muscle contracts and expands on a consistant basis. for instance the muscles in your neck that help support it during a crunch type movement and/or in posture can hypertrophy even without the presence of resistance. the muscles that are most suceptable to this hypertrophy are the sternocleidomastoids, levator scapula, etc. good way to alleviate this is during any weight-bearing activity to make sure your tounge is in the physiological resting position. this is just behind the front teeth and on the roof of the mouth. swallow and you'll find it. without the tounge in this position, the infra hyoid musculature are not able to effectively stabilize the cervical spine and the sternocleidomastoids among others are forced to take this job, causing hypertrophy and hypertonicity (extreme muscular tension). this leads to forward head posture and degenerative changes in the cervical spine.

i'm just stating that they will most likely occur simultaneously. not really saying that that's the problem, just trying to be meticulous. the only real issue i have is with a muscle that isn't supposed to gain size and unproportional strength ie: sternocleidomastoids, levator scapula, etc. it disturbs the correct length force/length tension relationships in the cervical spine causing degenerative changes.

here's a good example and some clinical observation you can do for yourself. look at the development of the sternocleidomastoid in you and others when you are simply walking or standing. then watch people performing standard crunches (pulling on their heads, over-use of their cervical flexors) and watch which muscle stands out the most.

a great way to asses for an imbalance is to see how many traditional crunches you can perform naturally, then place your tounge in the physiological rest position and perform a correct form crunch (if you're not sure about this just ask) and see if you're able to perform as many as before. this also assesses the strength relationships between the cervical flexors and the trunk flexors...the more lop-sided the ratio, the bigger the imbalance.

the rule of thumb is the farther forward the head, the more over-developed (hypertonic/hypertrophic) the sternocleidomastoids.

as for the muscles actually being able to hypertrophy, the rest ratio is directly related to the stimulus, the amount of rest AND the size of the muscle (among other factors). these are tiny muscles that recieve low intensity stimulation, but extremely high volume (posturally related volume)and have a little need for extended rest(compare rest ratios for the quads versus the biceps). anyone who knows about volume training, knows that this will cause hypertrophy to occur. there are some that believe that when a muscle becomes chronically shortened it's ability to fully contract is diminished, up to 60% in advanced cases. i've never personally seen any literature on this, but if using logic and common sense, it seems possible.

these are great questions man, keep it up...think for yourself, question authority!

oops got a little redundant there (the rest ratio is directly related to the stimulus and the size blah blah blah)

i guess proof reading is a necessity!

valid questions and don't ever feel like you're burdening or bombarding me, this is what i love to do.

have you ever been taught to observe disfunctional postures?

if not, once you have even a basic understanding, you'll realize that just about everyone has this problem, it's not exclusive to athletes.

this is caused from sedentary life styles (work, school, home, driving, etc.) improper movement pattern development (there is some AMAZING information on this!), improper motor pattern recruitment (see above), improper workout technique/protocol, congenital defects/imbalances, stress.....the list goes on and on, but mostly it's caused from modern civilizations "alopathic-type theories/inventions/innovations."

no i don't advocate going back to primal man days (i love my xbox damnit!), but looking back and learning what worked for thousands of generations can only help us make better choices in our own lives.

if you want me to, i'll elaborate on the motor/movement pattern recruitment information because some of this stuff will blow your hair right off your head! (if you're already going bald, you might want to wear a hat or something)lol

...is it normal to laugh at your own jokes?

Squats and Deadlifts can strengthen your ABs, planks with the weight on the back are good aswell just dont put too much from the beginning

Good morning,
I love squats do them everyday. And planks are not my #1 but I do those as well. I didn't tell you why my stomach muscles were weak. I had (4) surgeries and I have a hernia right now. So what exercises would you suggest that I do to flatten my stomach.????
