Hi there,

I've been following a FT program for about 6 weeks now (holy cow - it doesn't seem that long) and have really started to notice some results - very exciting. This is problem a dumb question, but I do really appreciate the insight.

My question though is around the "lower rep/more weight to bulk" and "less rep/less weight to tone" thing. Not sure if I am technically correct in these, but I'm sure you get what I mean.

Anyways, it seems that there is a lot of discussion about bulking in chest, etc.. but the ABS/Oblique workouts don't seem to really focus on that? Since muscle is muscle, they would work the same way - true? If you want to bulk in your ABS, focus on less reps with higher resistance, right? Are the obliques/Abs special in any way that we should treat them differently?

I am seeing results here, but just not as drastic as elsewhere. I'm wondering if thats because of some physical difference in the muscle or my not training this area with the same intensity.

Again - much THANKS!

Always work your abs with resistance training if you want that 6 pack. High reps and low reps can both work for abs. Mix it up.

Thanks BB.

I'm thinking that I should raise the weight and lower the reps opposed to what I have been doing.

The only thing I have noticed since I have been monkeying around with this is that I am experiencing much more "achiness" in the abs/obliques than the other muscle groups.

Thanks!

soreness...or at least the good kind signals that you're doing something right...and your abs are getting stronger/more muscular....that 'achiness' you are describing is the soreness....so that's good....keep it up...

Remember that your abs are muscles, just like your pecs or delts. You don't do hundreds of reps on the bench press or military press, so I don't see the point in doing hundreds of crunches. People may disagree with me on this, but I'm an advocate of doing a similar ab workout:
Crunches - 3 x 15 (hold and contract for 3 seconds at the top)
Leg raises - 3 x 15
Weighted crunches - 3 x 8
Bicycles - 3 x 12

Another thing to look at is the fact that you'll never see your 6pack if you've got layers of fat over top of them. Cardio is just as important as crunches when it comes to abs -- which may hinder your bulking, but it's a sacrifice that's got to be made.

Much thanks.

I have been really pushing myself trying to bulk up my obliques and abs - probably even a bit too aggressive for my experience level.

Sunday, I think I may have overdone it a bit on the seated twist - or at least that's what my left oblique is telling me.

I was able to work out last night pretty well, lowered the intensity just a bit, and just stayed away from that oblique (well - except for once, by accident, but it let me know).

It feels better today and today is an off day, so it should be ready to go again Wed.

FoS - FT does have me doing a pretty similar abs workout, which is good. It sides with 2 sets of more reps (10-12), so I think I'll focus on bringing my reps down with a higher weight and adding a set.

Again - thanks for all the great advice. I can't tell you how much I appreciate it.
