In 2 weeks I will have to do the Machine Assisted Wide Grip Chins exercise. There isn't one at my gym. So far I haven't had to do proper chin-ups, just pull-downs. I can't pull down my own weight yet, so I doupt I'll be able to pull my own weight up. That has always been my weak point, even as a kid.
In ftPro I can swap exerices. What should I choose instead? Is there a reason for doing chin-ups rather than pull-downs, except for the weight?

Chin-ups are an open chain movement, so the body moves around the bar. It allows more freedom of motion and is gnerally superior.
You could try using bands, or one of the other chin up progressions listed in the post "Chin up progressions" in the intermediate forum.

Thanks wrestler! I found the post. The one thing I haven't taken into account is the fact that I am stronger now than ever before. I'll give it a try and see what happens.

Yea, ideally you'll continue getting stronger and eventually be able to do them without assistance, but wide grip chins are no joke.

Even if you can only do 3 to start, that s great. You will see with time you will be do ing them by sets of 10-12.
Good luck.
