i wouldn't go into the lowest calorie intake if I were you, it's just plain unhealthy from all sides. You're just gonna crash, and won't make any gains. Try doing a search on basal stuff and such...i forget the term at the moment..

Plus if you start out very low and then you get to a plateau where you can't lose weight, what are you going to do?

don't want to hijack the thread, but I figure i will... I'm Male, 28, and my goal is fat loss... I need to gain the muscle too of course to keep the fat off, but fat loss in the short term is definately my priority... I am 6' and a half inch, I weight about 272lbs right now ;)
If anyone could advise me, I was thinking of posting the same question :) |

You need a caloric deficit to tap your fat stores. By this is simply meant that whatever amount of calories you are eating that keep you exactly the same with the same activity level, etc., you need to go below this. Start with a 250cal. per day reduction, let that run its course, and proceed again. 2 week frames are normally pretty good. Of course, if you eat a crappy diet, first just cleaning up your diet will give you results. Then start your calorie reduction. This must take place for you to tap into your fat stores.-------------- If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything.... bb1fit@freetrainers.com |

Im 25 and 20lbs over weight, and starting a little late. I need to lose that extra 20 by 2/1/05. Which is it low fat or low carb, how to tell?

Okay, here goes: it takes 3500 excess calories to gain a pound - so it will take a reduction of 3500 calories to lose one. So, that means with a combination of exercise and a caloric deficit you would "normally" loss 1-2 pounds a week, k? Everyone is different, grant it, but I believe you are asking for a world of hurt if you try to accomplish your goal in the amount of time allocated.

you need calories for energy, digestion, elimination, absorption, brain function, cns function, pns function etc. etc. etc. all of these functions need to be fueled from somewhere and if you don't have sufficient nutrition, your body is forced to leach these nutrients from your body (ie. calcium from bones, saturated fat from the heart, etc.)
it's not as simple as calories in/calories out. |
