is it just me or does it bother anyone else that these 'livestrong' bands are made by chinese slaves? when you buy a Nike product at least you know what you are doing, but when you are trying to support a charity and you find out that you just did as much harm as good it is kind of like shooting yourself in the foot. Also the money raised by the charity will never help any of these poor people, so it is not as though this is a means to an end. I am sure that people still would have bought as many bands for 50 cents more to have them made by Americans, or anybody who isn't making 12 cents a day. i am not even an American and i would have preferred that. The yellow band to me is a reminder of how selfish we can really be. we will un-nescessarily exploit another country for a little more in ours. On the other hand maybe North Americans really are that selfish...actually this might just be the proof, but i would still like to believe otherwise. i would love to hear from others on the subject...

I didn't know where they were made
How do the chinese feel about making them?? I'm asking since I have never been there to see how they feel - is it a good job in their socity?? What we think is bad maybe great to someone else. The Reason I'm asking is I was reading a Louis L'amour book & he was talking about how people thought of the poor Indian but to the Indian he wasn't poor
I kinda wonder if we think everyone should have 3 cars, 2 kids & 5 bedroom house then they need help but we really don't need stuff - do we??
& no I haven't bought one - I support things with Autism

519, its a shame but if you open two stores next door to each other...one sells cheap imports made in 3rd world countries by exploited workers and the other by well compensated workers, the prices in the cheap store being 25% less there is no doubt where most people will shop.
Reddy, I'm with you. How much do we really need. I am happiest on my boat. You can only have so much crap in the limited space. Our retiremen goal is to alternate our time between a boat and RV. We won't have many possessions and surely won't miss them.

Charlie i understand that in the case of two stores competing cost/price is huge. this is a charity we are talking about, not Wal-Mart and K-Mart. There is no competition for the Livestong band. Reddy i am sure that some of them are grateful for the jobs, the problem is that they work 14 hour days, and still don't earn enough to feed thier family every day or send the kids to school. you are right it seems on teh surface to be better than nothing, but if we didn't screw them over in the first place they would be sustaining thier own systems. i know there is always a country willing to sell cheaper labour, but that is the corrupt government making that choice, not the people. Anyway i know this is a really complex problem, and i don't want to stray too far from what my real peeve was here...the fact that a Charity is using slave labour....or labor for all you Americans out there. :)

As I sit here wearing one of the bands, I can't help but think there is competition for them. Lance Armstrong has come up with this way of supporting cancer research, while the Canadian Cancer Society is also asking for our money, so, indirectly, there is competition.
I am also aware they are made in China, but, while my first thought was 'perhaps these are made by kids in sweat shops' I have no proof to back that up. Are they made by slave labour? Dunno... Will it stop me from wearing it? Dunno that either.

I wasn't saying there is direct competition between the CCS and Livestrong... more indirectly, they, as with other charities, are competing for our money... it's not an outright competition like Coke and Pepsi (I choose Coke by the way)... but when you think about it, there is a charity knocking on your door or ringing your phone asking for your money all the time, so, in a way, they are competing for your dollar.

I am always torn when I hear stories like this...I remember a few years back about the Gap using child labour and it really bothered me. But then you have to think that maybe this is the only money that family sees...without it, their siblings are sold off into child prostitution, get their hands chopped off or worse for stealing food from the markets....does it justify it? No...in a perfect world, kids everywhere can just be kids, everyone has a chicken in the pot and roofs over their heads and warm beds and clean water and shoes on their feet...boycotting companies because of their distasteful use of child labour, forcing them to close or otherwise, may just leave these families with nothing.
So I agree with Reddy....and to let you know, AutismLink.com (i think that's the addy) has Autism awareness bracelets....just like livestrong but blue with red blue and yellow puzzle pieces....my husband and I wear ours all the time.
And I don't agree that the competition is on between the Canadian Cancer Society and Lance Armstrong's charity...dontcha think if they found the cure, they would let us know too?:)

To me charity is charity. If the kids are making bands so be it, or weaving carpets, at least they are protected from some pretty rutheless people and bringing something home for the family.
Oh..is there any Heinekin bands?
