I'm going in for oral surgery Monday to have all four of my impacted wisdom teeth removed...I'm terrified!:(
Being a hedonist...I loathe pain. I'm hoping to be completely passed out for the surgery and recovery phase. Anyone have anything positive to say about oral surgery and post surgery? Would love to hear it! |

Vicodin is usually involved. That could be good. :)

I had all of mine taken out at once. I was out of it and when I woke up I thought they hadnt done it. It was weird. The pain was minimal and most will give you a scrip for the pain. Swishing gently with warm salt water helped too. My sister in law had her taken out and she is 17, and CANNOT handle any kind of pain. What I learned from her is that a frozen bag of peas has more than one use! Good Luck!!

Taurie, Its almost as good as sex. You will have a fabulous time. I wish I'd been born with 6 wisdom teeth. While you are in the extasy chair ask for the root canal option. Be sure to cry out "deeper deeper" so you can really feel the love.-------------- A problem ceases to be such when you can laugh about it. Charlie

Charlie, are you suggesting I should have them done one at a time for more visits or, is there more of an intensification of extasy having them all done at once.
Well, I hope my doc gives me more narcotics than I know what to do with. I hate taking drugs but, I hate pain more. Perhaps the anticipation is the worst of it. Thanks for the encouragement and advice...I'll keep it in mind for sure. The other thing that upsets me is that I had to call the dentist's office to find out what prep-ing I should do. Cause really, who wants to go to the grocery store, pick up there drugs etc...after having surgery! They should automatically give you all the info as soon as you make the appointment. What's the consensus on this? |

taurie, make sure you keep your mouth super clean - the last thing you want is dry socket, there really is nothing worse. if you've got a good surgeon he'll have you so doped up on valium and pain pills you won't even know what happened, but if you get dry socket, you'll be in pain for a good week or so. keep ice on for the swelling and change your dressings often!-------------- success comes before work only in the dictionary. that's right. |

Yes, avoid the dry socket at all costs. Had mine done, all four, in Feburary. I will not go into the gory details. All I'll say is expect the worse so that when it's over it won't be as bad as you had thought.:)
Best part, I lost 6 pounds the week following.:laugh: -------------- It is no fun to be normal!!! |

I've been allowing myself to eat everything and all I want is matzo ball soup...still, I could lose a few. I've been feeling sick for the past couple months so I haven't been going to the gym. Doc says there is no sign of infection but, my throat still hurts...I just want to feel as good as I've always have felt...maybe after recovery I'll hit the gym again...lately I've only have been going once or twice a week...:(

I had mine removed a coupld of years ago and it was not bad, the worst part was my sweeling becuase i grit my teeth when i sleep so i had huge knots on each side of my face. i had to get some valium so that i would relax at night when i went to bed. I took it for about 2 wks and i was fine. One tip: NO FROZEN LEMONADE. It was fine when my mouth was still numb but when the numbness wore off my whole mouth burned for an hour or that is what it felt like. Pretty dumb on my mom's part i was feeling good on drugs and i did not know the difference.

I had mine removed last year. The dentist's foot print is just about removed from my chest. It shouldn't be too bad. The blood stains on my shirt and shoes washed off with no problem. Seriously though, get knocked out if you don't want to feel anything, and take the vicodins they feel good.-------------- My gym dues are not paid with money. |

Taurie - Sorry, I cannot lie as well as charlie...
I had mine out a couple of years ago. (I think i was 30..) the good part is your face won't feel like it is going to explode anymore from the pressure of those teeth trying to make their own room. Make sure you have someone to take care of you after surgery and you will be fine. Make sugarfree jell-o the day before, and make sure you have ice packs in the freezer -------------- If you fall down seven times, get up eight. |

Amy got me. I lied. I had mine removed in 1982 and they still hurt like hell. I've been in therapy for 15 years for the trauma of the surgeon and nurse laughing at my screaming. And that was just from the damn bill!!!!!!!!-------------- A problem ceases to be such when you can laugh about it. Charlie

Taurie, I had all 4 wisdom teeth pulled whilst in the chair and conscious, the only discomfort I had from it to tell the absolute truth was the initial needle, I could hear the liquid being squirted into my jaw, and also your jaw muscles might get a bit sore from having your mouth open so wide for a length of time, other than that it was great to get my mouth back to normal again.
Swirling Salt water will keep the wound clean and prevent dry socket, however if you smoke you may get a dry socket, if you smoke keep the gause in your mouth while smoking, and definately no alcohol, that will definately give you dry socket. There is no treatment for dry socket, you just have to put up with it until it clears itself, so will want to avoid this at all costs. Its a walk in the park no worries, you'll be fine |

They suck no matter what. If your roots are wrapped around your jaw bone like mine were, they will have to dislocate your jaw and this will cause a more painful recovery. (i couldn't get my jaw open wider than the width of my thumb for a week and a half)
Keep trying to move it after the first couple of days...itll help the soreness/recovery...just don't smoke at all during the healing phase (if you do which i don't think you do) Remember to take the antibiotics and the Hydrocodone. And remember to clean out the sockets like they have you do after the checkup (they sometimes give you a syringe lookin thingy to stick in the socket and shoot water in there) best of luck. |

Hey Taurie, I had mine done and it was actually a good time. I got to take a week off school, and being all drugged up wasn't bad either. I read, watched TV and ate soup and protein shakes all day long. It never really hurt, the only thing I didn't like was having the gauses in while it was bleeding.
I was so worried about it before it happened, but it turned out not bad at all. I had four out at once too and they were all impacted. Try to do it with a positive attitude, enjoy taking time off your regular life and have fun. My poor grandma just had to have her leg amputated, know that's a real operation to worry about! Good luck! -------------- Tom |

I have found the best way to deal with tooth pulling is the are of self detatchment. Get the most novicaine you can then detatch yourself from your body to a place where there is no pain.-------------- I am that which must be feared, worshipped and adored. The world is mine now and forever. No one holds command over me. No man. No god. I am a beast and that is enough. |

Keeping the sockets clean while they heal is worse than the surgery, You'll be out for that :)

ok i was kinda worried when i had mine out but it was no big deal, you will crash the whole day after you have them done. the doc gave me nitro, after the procedure i was yelling "if i keep one i closed i can see WAY better" and i guess 5 people had to keep me walking straight. good times. i didnt get chipmunk cheeks at all. i was bummed though cause i had a friend whos doc gave him his gigantisaur teeth when he was done, the doctor had to go and cut all mine so i had no trophies. i dont know if anyone said this but dont drink out of straws and for the first day get a bib, you will uncontrollably drool all over.

Hi guys! Guess what...the surgeon didn't want to do it regardless of my dentist's recommendation. He said that at my age the risks involved out weigh the symptoms I have especially due to the fact that they are impacted (underneath the bone). He suggested I take ibuprofen for the discomfort.
He also said that my symptoms are more likely caused by something else since, I didn't have any inflammation and my gum tissue is healthy. Apparently I was unable to articulate my symptoms to him correctly and by nerves forgot to mention that a few weeks ago when I saw my dentist he said my gums were indeed inflamed and now would be a good time to have my wisdom teeth removed because I showed no sign of infection dispite my sore throat. I guess I'll have to wait until they start to show signs, such as; inflamation and get a second opinion. Now I have more Jello than I know what to do with.:surprised: |

The surgeon think the pain is caused by my sinuses.
Anyone ever experience pain in there teeth from sinus trouble? |

Oh okay, well I guess that would make sense. Thanks!
I'll have to pay close attention to how my bottom teeth feel. |
2004/04/28, 10:45 AM
Taurie, sorry for the short answer the other day. I was pressed for time. I hadd a back bottom tooth that caused splitting headaches on the opposite side. I didn't believe the torturemiester when he told me the tooth was the cause. He root canaled and capped the tooth and poof, the headaches were gone. Between my wife and me we have put all our dentist's kids through Harvard with our various dental problems. You bet your bippy teeth can cause sinus pain.-------------- A problem ceases to be such when you can laugh about it. Charlie

Thanks Charlie!
I did notice the left bottom row hurting today for 10 minutes, surely those can't have anything to do with my sinuses. Can they? Dentist scare me:( |

Lower teeth can cause sinus pain. They can cause pain on the opposite side. Hell, your teeth can make your mama's sinus' hurt. God played a really cruel joke when he/she put all those nerves in teeth.-------------- A problem ceases to be such when you can laugh about it. Charlie

:laugh:Charlie...you find humor in bitter truth!
That was a cruel joke. A friend of mine got prostatitis from an infection he got when they took out his wisdom teeth. My dentist confirmed it's possibility and said they experienced someone having kidney failure during oral surgery! |
