I am 34 (almost 35) and lifted quite a bit in high school and college. I've always been thinner than I prefer. I quit lifting about 8 years ago and restarted 2 years ago. I only did upper body for those two years. I have finally decided to get going with my legs. I have been squatting with 135 just to get my form solid before moving on. A couple of days ago I moved up to 165 and noticed some slight soreness under the front of my kneecaps.

Should I move up in smaller increments? Is this soreness to be expected since I have'nt squatted in a while? When should I become concerned about the soreness? If it continues should I consider a change to leg press instead?

I am actually one of the guys happy to get to mid 30's so that I get some mass gains from mother nature. Thanks in advance.

Yes, you should. Especially if the pain persists. Large increments are not hard on the muscles, they have the capacity to keep up. What doesn't is connecting tissues like ligaments, joints, nerve endings, tendons, etc. So, guage your progressive moves by how you feel. Having worked out before, I am sure you know the difference between muscle sorness and "uncomfortable" soreness.
