I've gotten to the point where going to the gym is no longer something I look forward to, and I absolutely can't hold back on the bad food. my cheat day turned into more of a cheat week this time around.

The "inspired and motivated period" lasted for about 6 weeks and now it is coming to an end.

Anyways, I'm sure I'm not the only person who comes to this point. What do you do?

Tarab21, what is your carb intake like, and what kind of carbs are you eating? This might be part of your problem.
Take a week off from the gym it might do you good.
We all get like that sometimes. Re-evaluate your eating habits, read some good motivating mags.

That is one downfall I preach over and over again about the "cheat" day. It is so easy to fall prey to this syndrome, "well, last week I ate this or that, and it didn't seem to bother me, I will add this much more this week, and that meal turns into 2, then another, till all of a suddent...diet??? huh, yeah, I am on a diet.

Be careful with the cheats. They can be a healthy thing, but I personally find it much easier to stick completely to the diet I am on, the cheating just gives a "taste" of something forbidden, and it sometimes becomes overwhelming. Each meal is an entity in itself. Just start right away back on the proper diet, and pick things up. You can't undo what you did, and skipping meals is even worse.

As far as the motivation, losing the diet probably has a big part in that. Sometimes you feel if you aren't dieting, then why bother going to the gym? This is the exact opposite way to think. Do you have a freind who may want to exercise? It seems women like to have a "companion" moreso than men. This may help you, and get out your "big" pictures and look at them from time to time. Is this how you want to look? Have a picture of someone you admire also, and look at it too. Good luck to you....never give up.

excluding the last three days, my carb intake was almost entirely from fruits, vegetables, milk, and oatmeal. I have never been a big bread eater. I'm not saying that I'm having trouble losing weight, I'm losing too damn much. my doc said not to worry though, it will come back. The reason I lost so much was because this is the first "diet" or "healthy lifestyle" I've ever been on. It's also the first time in my life I've ever done excercise on a regular basis. So basically my metabolism didn't know what was coming and didn't really protect my bod. Free trainers tells me to eat like this. (I usually get very close)
Calories 1,332
Carbohydrates 200.0 g
Proteins 100.0 g
Fats 16.3 g

Getting some fitness mags is a good idea. thanks

Ron, thanks for the post. That was actually my first "cheat day" in the whole 6 weeks. it's been going on for three or four days though. It started out with a half cup of ice cream one day...then progressed to today which I don't even want to talk about, haha. Let's just say I ate something at perkins that literally translated to a plate of lard. There's a girl in my college speech class who refers to me as the "anorexic whore" so I had to go out with her and show her I know how to eat. I am in the middle of finals week right now and have been getting about 3 or 4 hours of sleep a night and when I get home I'm like "damnit, I need a treat" So then I can't hardly excercise without getting faint and then I just crave sugar...

wow, stuff just piles up, huh?

Thanks for the reply

Tara -

I was in the understanding from your profile that you are trying to NOT lose weight. What is your height? Your profile says you are only eating 1400 calories a day...are you trying to gain or just maintain where you are? If you are losing and you don't want to be losing as your profile states, maybe you are exercising too much and got burnt out?

As for the motivation and will power to stick with it...that has to come from within yourself.

Yeah you're right gwindalyn, I'm not trying to lose weight. My doc said not to worry though, it's just that metabolism was crazy-high when I first started because I always ate like a horse and never gained a pound. When I stopped eating like a horse, it burned fat/muscle like crazy. As far wanting to gain/lose/maintain...i don't care really about numbers. I just want to lose the soft layer off my body and gain lean muscle so I look better say, in a swimsuit and so I don't huff and puff going up the stairs. As for burning out, yeah I think you're right on that one. These dang finals had a lot to do with it too.

And yes, I know it must come from with in myself, but a little shove from someone else helps too :)

Thanks for your reply and hope you're doing well

tarab all you need to do at this point is step back and regain your strenght and resolve and start over at this very min. Forget what happened on the cheat day, what matter is whatis front of you right now. Good luck, I have fell off the wagon a few times too, just jumped right back on and I was stronger the second time around.

first of all you are not at an healthy weight... 5 3" and 97 lbs is NOT healthy. you said you ate like a horse. I think you should continue that.. don't eat junk, but eat good meals... lots of junk will not help you gain weight. one of my friends lost all her teeth last year because of unhealthy weight. I don't mean to discourage you, but I used to be very skinny and I had so many health problems. you are 19 and it is great that you wanted to start a healthy way of life. Don't be a victim of "american model look"... you should be at least 110-120 lbs... you can achieve this only by eating healthy. not 1400 calories, but over 2000 healthy calories...

if you eat well you will be motivated.

Hi, I'm 5'3", small frame, 116 lbs. I have to eat at least 1600-1800 calories a day to keep that weight up! I'm eating up to 40 gm fats per day and I'm still very lean and muscular. If you need some ideas for nutrition, ect, send me an e-mail and I'll try to help. Your body sounds severely undernourished, which may be why you're feeling burned out.

Hi there, I'm not undernourished. Weight is just a number and if you were able to actually see what my body looks like, you'd know I'm perfectly healthy. I went to the doc about this and I'm perfectly healthy.

Anyways, that's not why I was posting but appreciate your concern.

We all go through that cycle tarab! Just get right back into it. Dont stop. Things will change around us, but if you keep your focus, you will make the changes occur the way you want them to!

DONT STOP!!!

Yeah I'm hopping back on the wagon today, although I may take a day off the gym because the last few days I've gone it's really done me no good, I couldn't lift nearly the same weight I had been previously and couldn't make it on the treadmill for half the time either.

diet is getting back on track though.

thanks

I hear ya girl, I definitely go through periods of just dreading the gym. I just go anyways and usually in a couple days the motivation is back. I feel like I usually lose motivation the week before my period starts. I also find myself losing motivation if it's been awhile since I've taken my measurments but then as soon as I take my measurements and see results, my motivation is back through the roof.
Just think how upset you will be with yourself if you quit. I don't know about you but the guilt really hits me hard when I skip a gym session.
Working out is like anything in life - peaks and valleys - just keep pushing forward.

Tara, I'm like you. It's only recently that I've taken a long hard look at myself and realised what changes need to be made both in terms of working out and eating properly.
It's hard to keep going with healthy living changes when you're used to your bad eating habits.
But it's like everything else - when you have a bad day. It's passed. Finished. The best thing you can do is focus one day at a time.
It sounds like you're not eating enough to fuel your body. You're obviously going through a stressful time because of your finals and it's at times like that you sometimes revert back.
You're only human. Just re-assess your goals and start a new day.
All the best with your finals.

One other thing Tarab21, why would you want to go to lunch with someone that would call you "anorexic whore"? Hanging around negative, mean people that put you down certainly won't help your motivation.

you know what...finals. they'll tear you up into little pieces and spit you back out in another week. i remember treating the gym like a reward during finals week! course, a nap was also a reward...and so was a treat after a final. anyway, just wanted to reassure you that we've all been there. after a good night's sleep i bet you'll find that you haven't lost that much strength after all and it's easier to eat right :)

good luck!

thanks for all the posts everyone...
i finished my last final today, have been eating good, and even went to the gym and did a full work out without feeling as though I would die. Why did I go to lunch with her? well it's weird...she's not actually mean. when girls call other girls anorexic it's actually supposed to be a sort of jealous compliment...i don't know, it's weird. She's not really intentionally being negative. Hard to explain.

thanks again
