Welcome to FT... my first suggestion is to fill out your profile... that'll give you an indication of what to take in nutrionally... also, pick a fitness program here too... that'll help.. then look up Grocery List for a Bodybuilder... it's a sticky under the Nutrition topics...

Safely, a person can lose about a pound to two pounds a week... at first I suspect a lot will go, mostly because of water loss, but then it should average out to about a pound or two per week.. don't try to lose weight too fast, it's not healthy.

Do some cardio... walking is a good start... lots of info on cardio here too.. use Fit Buddy at the bottom of the page to do some research!

Good answer, TimDay.

Fill out your profile, that will help us, too. We don't know your age, your current weight, how much you exercise, how much you eat now. Those will all be part of the big picture.

You didn't gain the weight fast, rather it probably crept on over a few years, so you can't expect to lose it rapidly, either.
1-2 pounds a week is healthy. This is usually achieved by dropping your calories a little (maybe 200 calories less than you have been eating daily) and exercising to expend about 300 calories a day extra.

Pick a program do some reading and stick around here for help and motivation!

1. give stats

2. ggive goals

3. give workout

4. Diet and excercise combined give you a good healthy body. I can lose 20 lbs in 2 or 3 weeks butit wont be good for me. The highest sustainble healthy weight loss is about 2-3 lbs a week. Some peopel are extremly obese (450 and 5'10) and can lose 4-5 for a couple months and then it slows down. they are still making amazing prgress tho as it follows the rule of diminishing returns.

5. it;s also not HOW MUCH you eat... but WHAT you eat. I can eat 2k cals in one siting consisting of junk food but that isnt going to get me in shape

6. Not only is in it in what you eat but in how you eat too. If you spreadit out your metabolism stays up and yur stomach volume goes down thus decreasing your appetite for say an entire Large pizza from Dominio's.

In what way does eating frequent meals decrease the volume of your stomach?

I can down 4 small equality pzzas from dominion, 500 cals a piece. There's 2 cals.. about half of what I should eat every day. My stomach got used to me eatin once or twice liek that and so it expanded to handle the load. How do you think some peopel can eat vast amounts of hot dogs in one minute. Or how sumo wrestlers can go to the buffet and just down jaw dropping (no pun intended) plates of food? The body adapts.

My stomach was getting used to only eating once or twice a day but eating large amounts.. eating smaller amounts the volume decreases as your stommach doesn't need to be that big.

All of this according to a brother of mien who did life scienece (pre med) in university.

So, if I eat too many large meals my stomach is going to get stretched out and I will have to eat more?

My understanding is that the stomach has many accordianlike folds and a very elastic wall. Because of this, it can stretch to accomodate about 2L of food and fluid. There is no mention in any of my biology books that if you eat too much your stomach will permanently enlarge and as a consequence your need for food will increase.

It is my understanding that appetite is controlled by metabolism. Am I incorrect?

Hey, anni,
I think the point is that when you eat large amounts of food, your body gets used to it and you don't get that distended, uncomfortable feeling when you gorge.
I do beleive that the stomach stretches out and shrinks, depending on the amount of food you eatt on a regular basis, I can't eat nearly as much at one sitting as i used to be able to, but if i overeat consistently for a few weeks, I won't feel as uncomfortable eating larger amounts.

I don't have a textbook that states this, but I do think the stomach stretches and shrinks according to the amount of food you eat consistently. But i don't think it is permanent, and i don't think fatally yours was implying permanence.

Thanks asimmer, you know how freaky I am about the facts. I did a little more research, so for you other fact freaks, here's what I found.

Stomach size affects food intake

It's not the size of the body but the size of stomach that determines the food intake capacity of a person during and after a meal. A recent study has found that compared with normal-weight adults, those who are overweight take longer to feel the fullness at mealtime. Similarly, those whose empty stomachs are larger need more calories to feel completely full.

Researchers from the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine in Rochester, Minnesota, studied 134 healthy volunteers who, after an overnight fast, drank a liquid meal until they reached maximum satiation. Their stomach volume before and after eating was measured through non-invasive imaging. It was found that both body mass index (BMI) and fasting gastric volume were linked to the time it took participants to feel full. It was found that the fasting gastric volume or the size of a person's empty stomach was related to a feeling of fullness independent of body size.

The researchers also said that factors that control stomach volume, independent of body size might help predispose people to obesity and could serve as targets for weight-control tactics. These control mechanisms could range from eating patterns such as, whether a person eats small meals throughout the day or tends to binge, to hormones, to the nerves that control stomach contraction and relaxation. Addressing these factors might then alter how long it takes a person to feel full. For example, changes in diet or patterns of food intake might do the job, as could medications that act on the nerves or hormones that control stomach volume, or other procedures or devices that change gastric volume.

Before any of the above findings become a reality, further research is needed to pinpoint the critical controls involved in determining stomach volume.

Thank you for your patience. I wasn't trying to be mean, I just have a very methodical brain and I tend to question people very closely until I get precise information. It drives my children crazy because they can't get away with anything, ever. They are used to me and sometimes I forget that other people are not.

Small meals rule!! I love being able to eat every two hours. The only problem I have is when the workout comes up. I try to eat an hour and a half before the gym, and eat right after. I'm still trying to work out the kinks, even after all these months.

Yeah, that can be tricky. Especially if your schedule varies. Sahkes are useful if you just need something in your stomach before you workout, but it isn't time for a meal or it is too close to your workout to eat something more filling.

These are meal-replacement shakes, right. Not the protein shakes. I drink those, but only after my workout.

I don't know how that relates, but I thought this was a good thread.

Scary thought though --> "Normal adults" in North America are overweight! (I'm a Canadian and I'm completely average--that's unacceptable to me)

I notice as I'm getting more and more into my training schedule (that) I eat consistently (all day), I rarely get hungry, and when I eat until I'm not hungry (as opposed to full), I almost always feel better than if I ate three times until full.

Reminds me of a farm story (That involved me throwing up my lunch 'cuz I ate 'til I was full and then started throwing hay bails)

Just some thoughts
