You'll build much more powerful legs with squats, I switched over about 2 and a half months ago and it's made a huge difference. No other excersize causes me to sweat to the pound where I'm half blinded from all the perspiration covering my face.Leg Press use to be enough but eventually I got really tired of loading all those 45lb plates on and off.

I use a smith machine for sqauting. Any views on this. Strength has been increasing well. Form is stabilised as well.

yes. Many views. Most of the educated views are negative.
"form is stabilised": this is not a good thing. Using freeweights, you are forced to stabilize the weight yourself. This forces you to use a greater amount of muscle, which leads to better gains, as well as building up stabilizer muscles. It is also a more effective way to train the CNS (central nervous system). Also, doing smith machine squats force you to lean back into the machine, thus neglecting posterior chain development. For athletes, the posterior chain is where you get all your explosive power from. For powerlifters, its what moves a heavy pull or squat. also, by forcing your body into an unnatural movement pattern, the smith machine can cause damage to tendons, as well as muscle inbalances, both of which lead to injuries. Stick with free weights. I am sure someone out there will disagree with everything I have said in this post, and if you guys need me to cite sources to prove anything I said, then just ask and I will try to dig them up. In men fitness or somthing this month...showed only a 5% increse of squating in a smith machine.....and a loss benching in a smith.
Depending on your goals.....bodybuilders use smiths alot....i've heard squats....can make the stomach bigger or somthing.......but my personal opinion.....free weights are the way to go. -------------- Friends don't let friends squat high... |

only if you lift powerlifting style. Powerlifters expand the ribcage and stick the stomach out to get more power out of the hole. Cant see how squatting regular would cause you to get a larger stomach.

wasn't over a long time....just one rep max......like say you max 200 on bench......go to a smith....and you may max 190......somthing like that.
Thats what I was refering to wrestler..."powerlifting style"....I personally don't care......my trunk is very very strong....might not look good but it pretty strong lol -------------- Friends don't let friends squat high... |

squats dont hurt your back. bad form while squatting and the smith machine hurt people's back. that is a myth propogated by people that have never actually weight trained a day in their life and yet proclaim to be "experts". in the elite fitness articles, they are known as weightlifting "yodas", people that can only lift with their minds.
Squats devolop a strong back and good core power, something very important to pitching. Not to mention that you will become faster because you get all your power in a sprint from you posterior chain. the two best exercises for the posterior chain: squat and deadlift. Don't let anyone tell you squatting will injure you. I have been lifting for 8 years, yes powerlifting style, lifting both squats and opponents in wrestling and brazilian jui jitsu, and now mixed martial arts. never got hurt lifting. |

no good workout should ever hurt any part of your body. u got 2 no your limitations and your expectations before u do anything. if u start to feel a sharp pain, then stop, take a rest, and either start again or stop for the day. if u feel a dull pain, go for it. and make sure to stretch and warmup before u do anything. well w/e im out.-------------- Victory belongs to the most persevering. -Napolean Bonaparte |

NOT doing squats will get you hurt quicker....than doing them.
Squats strengthen everything! over 200 muscles are used when squatting.It strengthens acl, mcl, and other ligaments which are prone to "blowing out" in running sports. Your just looking for as excuse NOT to do them... -------------- Get your bicep curling, cut off shirt, matching workout outfit wearing,flexing in mirror "toned" wanna-be ass , out of my squat rack! People don't reach thier true potental, only those who seek it. |
