when you are cutting down, do you gain muscle size or does your muscles only get toned up?I was in the impression that your muscle get only toned, but my trainer told me otherwise

I would say if your cutting you are leaning out , thus your muscles are showing more. You are always building them if you continuously training them.

If your muscles are showing more, you are losing more fat on your body which makes them show through bettter. If you are lifting heavy then usually u are putting muscle on, making them bigger. But if you have fat covering your muscles, no matter how big they get under there u wont see them.

Alot like your abs.

Yep the guys got it alright. The problem about cutting is that you often risk to loose some of your muscle mass......

That's why the competition diets are soooo long.

Cutting has actually nothing to do with your muscles, it's all about diet and FAT.

Are you sure that you mean cutting? and not bulking, toning or whatever?

Cutting down means cutting fat. You will lose some of the muscle mass as philia said because in order to drop this fat you must starve your muscle from some much needed carbs and calories.

The is actually no such thing as 'tone' for your muscles. That term is just used to describe being lean.
