I am going to begin a training plan but have no idea what weight I should start working out with....is there a way to figure this out and if not what have some of you done to determine your starting weightlifting ability?

The only way to figure out how much weight to start out with is to pick up some weights. Do what you are comfortable with. Don't overdo it when you're first starting out; many beginners make that mistake. Don't go too heavy at first or you'll run the risk of a serious injury. Good luck and congrats on making one of the best choices of your life - weight training.

Also, if you follow an ft program, it is pyramid based. This means that as the set progresses, the weights will increase. Make sure you account for that when you pick up the weights. Just do what you feel you'll be able to lift given the recommended number of repetitions.

Good luck!
