I was wondering if for example if you where to eat like 3000 or more calories in excess would it turn to fat right away or what happens to the excess food calories if you have one or two days that you go alot over your required calorie needs?

I'm afraid the excess calories will go to fat. This is why trying to keep your calories consistent is really important.

People who eat excessively one day then cut back drastically the next are doing the worst possible thing - on the excess day they put on fat, and on the starve day they lose muscle - how to raise your body fat in one easy step.

Having said all that, I fully intend to eat excessively today!

3500 calories = 1 pound

you question depends on different factors...such as type of extra calories....junk food vs healthy good, your activity level in prior days, how well a particular food is absorbed by the body, etc

So after you take into account your metabolism, activity level, digestion , etc

if a sedentary person does that...then likely extra calories will turn to fat...especially if it's junk food...

in a fit/athletic person, some of the calories, esp high in protein or generally healthy, will go in part to building, rebuilding muscle, and part in fat...

so majority of the calories will still turn to fat...just less so in a fit person...

So what do you think is the best thing to do after these high cal days? Do you just go back to regular exercise and cardio routine or should I kup the cardio for a couple of days to burn of the extra cals? The reason I ask is because I lost all self conrrol this weekend and I know I did bad on my calories yesterday and today, I am normally good about not eating in excess. But I did do my workouts last night and did them this morning, so its not like I was a lump on the sofa but I did have a lot of cookies(they where very good, my mom makes good cookies)

Personally, if I have eaten a bit more than I should have, I usually do extra cardio, but I break it up by doing some in the a.m. and another in the p.m. or if I am doing every other day cardio, I do it everyday. I keep my weights the same and use the extra cardio to burn some of the extra calories. Just me.

Don't feel bad about overeating on certain days...

IT'S ALL ABOUT CONSISTANCY

your body has a set point in your brain that tells you when to eat or stop...so occassional overeating won't shift that setpoint permanently...it's consistant eating patterns that do that....that's why 'cheating' with slight overeating or eating 'cheat foods' once a week won't ruin your diet and may in fact help you stick with it...

If you feel really guilty, go for a walk/jog/run/jump rope for 30-60 min...

Also I have read many things......that says "cheat" days help in jump starting your metabolism, and alss just break up the manontany, of same thing same thing over and over again. Most bodybuilders allow them selves to eat one meal a week where they can eat anything they like. Helps them stick to a strict diet......and just gives the body somthing to use its not used too. I know if I eat a burger or somthing( fast food), it usualy "runs" straight threw me lol

You have to be sensible. Think about it, in a perfect world, every protein calorie we ate over maintenance would go to building muscle. But in reality, we know this not to be the case. If every calorie we ate over maintenance went to fat, then we would all blow up like balloons in a matter of weeks.

On that note, it takes about 3 days for me. I know this because I get glycogen deprived for shows, and have tested how long it takes for the overfeeding to start to show. Most of us are a bit different. I know other competitors whom it shows on almost immediately.

Now, that being said, if you eat that much over for one day, and then go on back on your sensible diet and training, you will be fine. If you make a habit of it, then it will become bad. The problem being, you see, well, it did not hurt me that one day, I can do it again. And then a week later, well, still see no adverse effects, why not again. Then one day it will show, and then it is too late. You have to really start heavy dieting again to lose it. So, be careful with the extraordinary cheat days. You will have to "learn" your body.
