I am on the Weight loss and definition program 4 days a week. I have the special ab and chest mass workouts added. I also play basketball anywhere from 2-4 days a week. My diet consists of nothing but slim fast shakes and top ramen. I know ft has a nutritional section but this diet has worked very well for me in the past. However at that time I wasn't working out, just doing cardio. Is this diet going to hinder muscle gains?

As long as you are hitting your daily recommended protein consumption, you'll be fine!

Robert, I know you are experienced and smart and all, but I can't seem to believe a diet of top ramen and slim fast is at all healthy if done long term. What's up with that?

Top ramen is dried noodles that get reconstituted using boiled water. I believe Cain is on a weight loss program and not a mass program. Therefore, if his diet has worked for him in the past (and he is happy with the results) I see no reason in changing it. Of course, lumina, you brought up a good point about continuing this type of diet long term.

Cain, if you feel your energy is depleted now that you are more active and incorporate a weight training program, you may consider adding quality food (low fat) into your diet. You cannot subsist on just slim fast as a meal replacement.

You may also find that increasing your carb intake one week, then lowering it another, may actually help you lose weight more quickly.

Really? That's interesting about the carbs. I'll try that too. Actually I basically consider this diet very short term. I lost 60lbs in 4 months on this diet and just playing basketball 4 times a week. (4 months is alot longer to go than I plan to this time. I don't have that much weight to lose) But I will have to watch the protein. Thanks for your help.

Cain, our bodies adapt very quickly. So, by changing up our food intake, exercise regimen, etc., we keep it off guard so that it can't adapt as fast.

One final note: there is no substitute for food when it comes to getting the proper nutrition. Eating quality food low in fat and high in protein can give you superior benefits.

Good luck on the rest of your diet! Sounds like you're already off to a great start...

While you can lose weight eating Raman and slim fast I disagree with it. (thats my opinion and I cannot just scan this post and let it go unsaid)
While dieting you do need adequate protein. As you lose weight it is not always the fat weight lost but muscle weight as well especially on a low calorie low protein diet. You can lose weight by resticting calories, regardless of the food type!! I could lose weight eating 2 Snickers bars and 1 bagel a day! (I'd feel terrible though..)
Anyway if the weight you are losing is muscle, that changes your lean mass ratio to bodyfat ratio ...therefore your metabolism is reduced. (remember LONG TERM, muscle burns more calories to exist in simple terms of course)
Unless you keep those calories restricted for the long term you will put the weight back on faster than before and you risk that this will be fat weight and then your bodyfat increased above where is was before. It a cycle. You need to eat a more balanced diet that is higher in protein and still keep the calories restricted if you want to lose weight. Then you make LIFETIME changes in your eating habits and win the battle of weight control for LIFE. Then when you go back to eating Normal (so to speak) you have developed good habits. Even if you decide to continue with the Raman and Slim Fast diet, concider replacing the Slimfast with a MRP drink with more protein less sugar.
Have a nice Easter.

Thanks much. Actually I am considering a creatine shake. (I keep hearing about them here.) But as far as protien goes here's my problem. I don't eat red meat, or pork. I only eat Chicken and Turkey. My day to day eating habits are actually really good. I've spent the last year and half completely changing my diet. But it only maintains my weight. I haven't gained or lost a pound (before my diet) in about 8 months. My staple food are turkey, chicken, shrimp, (shellfish), rice, potatos, and pasta. I cannot and WILL NOT eat fish. BLAH!! I could eat fish sticks?? But I don't think that's quite the same. Do you think that maintaining this diet then given what I normally eat I will gain alot of fat back? And is creatine for adding mass or will it be benificial on a weight loss/definition program?

Uh, nevermind. Creatine is not what I thought it was. You're talking about using something like megamass 2000 from GNC or the like correct?
