hey guys

i'm 38 and this is first time as member of a gym. i was in marine's in 1987 and worked out only when i had to i was to worried about getting my party on. i just got divorced after 11 years and joined to burn stress and get healthy. i thought i could go and vent my frustrations i expected to be a recluse. i had been wollowing in self-pity before i started. to my suprise it seems (at least at my gym) people are so nice and freely give advice on my workouts. i find now i don't have frustrations to vent after i get started i just enjoy it. I now have made goals for how i want my body to look and it is really fun working towards them. i wasn't expecting the good natured attitudes that i found. it makes since when i think about it in retrospect if people respect themselves enough to work out then they probably respect other people they come in contact with.

Congrads on finding a good gym. mine is ok, but nothing to brag about when it comes to friendly people that's for sure.

they may can lift more weight but what does it mean when you look in the mirror and you like what your body looks like but you cant look yourself in the eye! ive just been working out 3 days now and i am enjoying it so much more than i expected i would but at the same time no matter how much better a person improves himself there will always be room for improvement. keep your eye on the ball at school and in the gym and keep pecking away at your goals relentlessly and you will one day look around you and all the meatheads will have fallen by the way-side.

ps: gangstershoes I've read some of your posts. your no meathead. Question what is better for the building muscle free weights or machines or is there a difference. if free weights are better i can only do light weight/ more reps because when i get tired i lose control of heavy weights i work alone no spotter. can i build muscle mass with less weight more reps or should i use machines and more weight.
my way of thinking is for now because im just starting out i should use less weight more reps with free weights and focus on form and as i develop strength gradually increase weight. what do you think?

i would use free weights as much as possible in your program. dont feel bad about starting low, everyone has a starting point. free weights are going to help train your stabilizer muscles, which typically arent fired in machine exercises. they also mimic everyday movements alot more closely, and will have a better application to everyday tasks. i really only use machines to supplement my training, if i have to work on some particular.

thanks bropie... sounds like a plan. Are there any good books that demonstate different exercises? I see at the gym people do all kinds of inovative methods that i would not have ever thought of. i waste alot of time trying to figure out what to do. i want to make me out a plan to take with me so i can work out my muscles and not my brain. (my brains are a lost cause ha ha)

check out the archive at bodybuilding.com.. its pretty comprehensive. if you're looking for a plan, i suggest taking one here from FT. theres been lots of success had from these routines, amd it can give you a chance to get started working out with a proper time, whille you do some research yourself in the offtime :)

YM bropie is right in that you should use more free weight exercises and for the reasons given... but also starting out keep reps in the 12-15 range.....so it's not too light and not too heavy....so that you will get the hang of the exercises and the proper technique.....after a few months you may want to lift a bit heavier....depending on your goals...

just on a side note ....be careful who you ask for advice...there are plenty of people who offer advice.... the problem is that they don't know diddly about diddly....they just run their mouth to appear knowledgeable...pick and choose your sources....also depending on your goals the advice offered may help or hurt you especially if the people offering their advice don't know your specific goals...just things to think about...

good luck and don't mind your starting point....we all started from light weights and slowly progressed..

thanks menace

i started out doing 15 reps of weights (mostly dumbells) with weight were on my 15th rep on 3rd set i can barely finish with same motion as on first rep. Also i took advice about diet. i eat 3 meals aday smaller portions and snack on bannana's,almonds,ect... i put my profile on here and printed out a nutrition guide and im trying to take in the calories, protien, carbs ect... as stated.
i have now been at it 2 wks now and its exciting how much better i feel now and i can tell im getting stronger already. I definatly have more energy. i havent written out a work out plan yet. i work on a 3 day cycle 5 days per week focusing on diff body parts each day in cycle.
im still looking for a good book describing diff exercises and watching people in gym. i figure after about 2 mo i will have some good ideas and make out a routine for each day and doc weight and reps of each exercise i do.
i really do appreciate advice ive been given and any future advice to future questions i might have.

ill be away prob till after Christmas. (not gym but this web site)

merry chrismas to all
