Hi,
I dunno if this is healthy but my target hr supposedly is 164 but I once went up to 202 on an elliptical. Is this bad? Why is my target so low....it takes me couple of seconds to get to that hr. Is it that the lower ur hr the fitter u r?

Thanks

Zak...164 seems very high for a target heart rate, and 202 would kill me. Would you consider yourself an athlete? For an athlete then I believe 164 is good if you're able to maintain it...but for someone just trying to stay healthy then I would think that was very high. My target is about 130-145.

If you're using the hand grips then you might want to check another machines...those hand grip HR monitor are rarely consistent or accurate from one machine to another.

I'd say anything over 0 is pretty good...

I'm not an athlete thats for sure lol. I used other machines, they vary by about + or - 2 . So some say 202 and some say 200. But I think my target hr is 164 coz im quite young. 164 is really easy to reach, But I only reach 200 + when I am towards the end of my cardio session and I really REALLY push my self. The harder I push myself the more I see my heart rate go up. But is this unhealthy?

What is your resting heart rate? Generally the worse shape (cardiovascular) you are in the faster it is..

Resting heart rate:
Average for a man is 70 and for a woman around 75 (beats per minute)
A quick way to measure is counting for 10 seconds and multiply by 6 or count for 15 seconds and multiply by 4
A quick way to figure your approx maz heart rate is 220 minus your age

Hi Zak,

You don't calculate it - you measure it. Take your pulse reading while lying in bed resting before you get up in the morning. You may want to average the readings over a few days to get a more accurate result.

I got up to 181 doing HIIT. It was only for a few seconds. I was jogging at about 9 mph.

Generally during HIIT, I get up to 160-165 and during standard moderate-level cardio, it's 135-143.

My resting heart-rate is 145-150.

I dnt understand how to count the heart beat, but what I did was I counted my pulse for 1 minute and there was 85 beats. I dunno wot that means.

yes I finally have the propper equation. U were right lonegirl.

220 - your age = ___. Multiply this number by 0.6 and then by 0.8.

This will tell you how many beats per minute is an ideal range. Example:

40 year old = 220 - 40 = 180
180 x .6 = 108
180 x .8 = 144

Target heart rate range is between 108 and 144 beats for one minute. Measure your heart rate so during activity so you'll know that you are getting the most of your workout.

Thanks

I always have problems measuring my heart rate. It's a mind coordination thing...I can't count heartbeats, then count seconds, then when I go to multiple I've already forgotten how many beats there was. Very confusing.

Sounds too easy. Besides not only can I not count, but I can't type either.
