I just wanted to thank everyone.. I've read lots of posts and I think this is a perfect place for me to be right now as everyone is so helpful.

Now, my question (long)

I'm fired up to start working out.. over the past year or so, I've gained 20 or 25 pounds even though I play hockey once a week and softball once a week (yea, softball isn't that strenuous ;p) yet my diet is horrible and I drink waaay too much beer.

I'm going to start my program at the beginning of December so that I can do it right by joining a gym and planning things right.

Is there anything I should be doing between now and December to prep for this.. or better yet, is there anything I *can* do in the meantime? I plan on doing 30 minutes of cardio 4 days a week in addition to my 4 strength workout days.

I'm thinking about going ahead and starting the cardio now (since I don't have access to machines until Dec) so does that sounds like a plan? Also, how is drinking wine as opposed to beer in relation to how it affects my body and its progress?

Thanks for any input and I look forward to working out and getting to know everyone!

Well, to address your questions...first and formost, this would be a great time to "clean up" your diet in preparation for your training. This is of the utmost imoportance, no amount of training is going to do you much good with the "horrible" diet you have as stated. This means removing starchy, sugary, simple type carbs. Get your body used to eating a cleaner diet. Start out small if you have to, depriving yourself of too much at once may be overwhelming and lead to severe cravings. You may start out for instance cutting out your soda if you drink alot, or at least cutting down. Substitute flavored tea, Crystal light, etc. Follow with cutting back on sweets, sugary treats. Use them for rewards only if you have to to satisfy cravings. By all means, cut down on the beer. Empty calories here. By December, be eating more lean proteins, fibrous carbs like veggies and sweet potatoes and brown rice. Ditch the white bread. Opt for whole grains. This will be a good start toward being ready for the task at hand. Besides that, you will undoubtedly be all the healthier. Start today! Putting off till tomorrow is just a delay tactic. You have the desire, or you wouldn't have put up the post. You are surrounded here by a community of encouragement. Use it...we are here for you...

Congratulations on changing your life. I had the such a terrible diet when I was younger that it turns my stomach to think about it now. I ate hotdogs, and ice cream, chips, pop, butter on everything, everything deep fried, you name it, I ate it! Yuck! Luckily for me, I found exercise and cleaned up my diet. Don't think that you're looking at chicken breasts, spinach and egg whites for all time. It's really important to fuel your body properly, because food is exactly that, a fuel. Your car runs much better on premium, am I right? I still have a (small) bit of chocolate most days, and I think a tiny little indulgence helps me from having a really big indulgence. Also, if you make little changes, say multi-whole grain (my brother calls it bird-seed) bread instead of white, or spices instead of butter to flavor your food, there won't be a great big void in your life where food used to be. If you sift through the diet and nutrition forum, there's tons of suggestions for nourishing meals and snacks. If I absolutely must have fast food, I order the kid's meal and savour the itty-bitty burger. Just making a few simple changes will probably help you to feel so much more energised that you'll be looking forward to cutting out the junk. Keep coming back to ft, it's a tremendous source of motivation and support. Good luck!
