Hi there! I am following the 12 week program and checked with your diet program too. I am considered a hardgainer since i've been working out for more than one year and a half and there was little progress in mass and volume. So i am following a diet suggested by your site of aprox 3100 calories a day. The problem is that i started one month ago or so with this and I'VE GAINED WEIGHT........but even though i gained some mass (mostly chest, an inch or so) I clearly gained a nice pair of lovehandles and a belly!!!!I understand that for hardgainers we have to stick to the program WITHOUT aerobics. So.......any suggestion? My stats are: 5.8/155lbs 34 w (now) 41 chest, 12 arms. When i started my chest was 39, and my waist was 31!!! Any comment or suggestion??? Tks in advance! |

What's in your diet? If you eat too much junk food then of course you'll gain weight, fat!! And even for a hardgainer some cardio can be necessairy. What about doing three times 20-30 mins weekly? Hmmmm maybe you are not that much a hardgainer as you thought but the simply reason of not having had much progress during the first time was that you did something wrong..... It's great that you are putting on muscle mass now. Just do a little cardio as well and you'll be fine quickly!!! Good luck! -------------- - Nina :o) La vie est toujours aussi belle..... |

Well, how far along are you in the 12-week mass program? Also, as Nina pointed out, "quality foods" should not get you fat.As far as cardio, if you want a slimmer waistline, you're going to have to do this...unless you are already involved in some type of sport that can simulate sustained increase in heart rate for a period of time. Anyway, when you consume your 3,100 calories, pay close attention to the type of food you are consuming. -------------- **_Robert_** Pain is temporary; glory is forever! |

thank you very much to both. Obviously i am paying attention to what kind of food i am consuming and, by the way, i have never been a big fan of junk food or even sweets or candies, so i stick, in general, to very healthy food. As Philia pointed out, may be i am not as "hardgainer" as i thought i was but i have been working out for TWO years now (the first year without following any diet or exercise program) and had little muscle gain....It looks like i am a "hardgainer" for everything except for my waist!!!!!:( I've read somewhere in a site written by a "Hardgainer" (Mr Ellis or something) that skinny guys MUST NOT do any aerobic because those minuts of aerobics will mean loose of some muscle gain. That if we want to have fast muscle gains, we have to EAT EAT EAT and live with the idea of a "belly" for a while until the gains are visible and for "real" and then, yes, start a cardio activity to loose those unwanted "extra" belly/lovehandles. What do you think about that? I REALLY want to have a muscular body and dont know if i am in the good track to get it...... tks in advance for your kind advise A. |

Yes it is a big bugger that the human body is not really able to anabolize (build muscles) and catabolize (burn fat) in the same time.....As I said so many times, of course you can get toned and loose fat in the same time (even thou Rob keep disagreeing with me!! ;-) but if you are looking for very big muscles or to get really cut (for the summer) then it's rather difficult to do the both in the same time. You got one solution thou, but it's a very strict and often very difficult diet where you'll be able to put on some muscles and burn fat. This is by using fat as energy source which means that you have to cut down drastically on your total carb intake, keep the proteins relative high and then lots of insaturated fat. This is the rules of a ketogenic diet. This works well for some and not for others. I'm not sure that you are a hardgainer but the fact that you just didn't give your body the needed nutrition to build muscles could be the reason why you didn't have much gains. Still as I said in the first letter, you should include some cardio training. Good luck to you!! -------------- - Nina :o) La vie est toujours aussi belle..... |

Sorry Nina...but Arnold, Michael and I feel the same way about being able to lose fat and get muscular at the same time. I think if the circumstances were right and if the person has good genetics, then it can happen.Alain, just keep eating and gaining weight. Tony Ellis was right about the cardio...it's counter-productive if you're trying to gain mass. Save that for when you are ready to define and tone the mass you have obtained. Good luck! -------------- **_Robert_** Pain is temporary; glory is forever! |

Ditto that. In my experience, when combining even a light cardio routine with a mass gaining program, my strength gains diminished. Depending on how much cardio, they diminished quite a bit. Everyone is different (so, this may not be the case for others), and fat is definately harder to shed once you have put a bunch on, but it will come off when you begin cutting if you apply a strict diet and applicable workout routine as outlined here at FT. |

I am an extreme hardgainer, so I avoid as much cardio activity as possible. People think I am lazy because I try to park real close to buildings and always take the elevator. I also take naps whenever possible lol. If they only knew my true reason for laziness...to grow.-------------- Vaya con Dios... Keith |

Hey Skinnyguy, what's your diet like? I bet I can put some pounds on you...if you adopt a 4,000+ calorie diet! Think you can handle that?-------------- **_Robert_** Pain is temporary; glory is forever! |

I eat HUGE amounts of food! But,it is hard for me to get an accurate calorie count because most of my food comes from a buffet and I have no way of measuring it. I try to switch my diet up so it doesnt get boring, which means it would be hard to list an average day. This is what i ate yesterday: 1) 3/4 cup oatmeal, 30g whey protien in about 1 1/4 cup of milk, 1/2 cup of applesauce. Workout Legs 2)1/2 can of red bull w/creatine, 1 cup of hawaiian punch, 40g whey protien in 1.5 cup milk. 3)2 boneless chicken breast(about 6oz), 1 cup green snap beans, 1 cup corn, very small amount of bread with a lil beef+green pepper(1.5oz), 1/2 cup milk.4)1 cup cottage cheese w/2 sliced pears. 5)2 tbsp Peanut Butter, 15g whey w/ 1cup milk, 2 egg whites. In addition to all the food, I drink about 3/4 gallon of water a day and other supplements. I was only awake about 13 hours so I didnt have time to eat a sixth meal. I am also a lil sick. Once I get my schedule on track I will be able to eat more and sleep less. Working at a Casino gives me a wide variety of food to choose from. Even though we are only allowed one meal, I eat 2 or 3 lol. My only problem is when they serve beef I do not know what the EXACT kind to look up on the food search. They tell me its just roast beef and im like, no it has to have another name... whew that was long, its time to eat :D -------------- Vaya con Dios... Keith |

The buffet thing may be counter-productive. Granted it's at your place of work, it would be hard (at least for me) to consume so much in one sitting.Anyway, from what you listed, the total calories doesn't seem to add up to much. And it's not the quantity of food but the quality that counts. Don't be afraid to eat a good proportion of fat as that will help you boost your calories. I believe Jbennet posted once he ate a lot of pizza when he wanted to gain mass. -------------- **_Robert_** Pain is temporary; glory is forever! |

hey guys! thank you very much for your help and advise!I will keep eating as much as i can (though i am NEVER hungry, and i tend to do not eat, so all of this is a real sacrifice for me) and no aerobics at all. (will follow Tony Ellis advise). The problem also is that i am a "hyper" active person and cant hold on: last sunday i couldnt hold myself and i biked for almost 4 hours!!!! i felt "guilty" afterwards but i felt great and exahusted. I dont either fall asleep easily: Naturally i only need 6 hours and i know it's not that much..........but i cant simply exahust myself UNLESS i bike 4 hours or things like that :( anyway, tks again for your help! Cheers! |
