As a child I was one of the most un sports minded kids out there. I would have much rather have a book in my hands, then play a sport. That is not to say I did nothing, no I ran, played games etc, but nothing supervised. Which is why I am rather surprised to find myself at this point in my life involved in a sport. Weightlifting is indeed a sport. Overall combined with cardio, diet it turns into a lifestyle as well, but that actuall weight training is a sport. You do have people competeing against each other either for pride and the acomplishment, or for fame and money. Hell even the olympics have it as part of the games. I like to think of myself as a budding powerlifter. I thought once with sumgness that I knew a lot about the weight training game.
I found out in the last 2-4 years how little I knew. Sure I could tell/show someone how to lift correctly. I even saw good gains in terms of strength and such. But I really had no idea of the science behind the game. Some of the people I have met along the way actually astound me in the depth of their knowledge. I thought I was smart, but these people are masters of the game and that amazes me. I feel that in the last year or so I have a better grasp of what I want to do and how to do it. My first thought was to just improve the bench press numbers(yeah I want a big bench, so what?), but more and more I want to compete in a real power lift meet. I do not care to even place just go and do it. So that is my long term goal that in the next 2 years I will do that. The title of this is growing up, I feel that I am doing that in this game. I am growing not only as a weight lifter but also as a person. Training has taught me to wait for the gains, you can train as hard as you can but the improvements will come in due time, usually when you least expect it. I love the Iron, I wake up thinking about it. I talk about it, I dream about it. I live to be under the iron each day. It totaly blows my mind to think that 10 years ago I could not lift 100lbs off the floor now I am aiming for a lot more. It is a good feeling this Ironlifting we do, and remember to keep learning and growing. the rewards are huge! Mutt -------------- Less Talk, More Chalk! 7707mutt@freetrainers.com |

great words mutt, i couldnt have said it better myself
i'm in the exact same situ, growing up having played alot of sports but that was more or less something to do in the summer/winter to keep me in shape. my heart was never into it, until i discovered weight lifting. it opened my eyes to a whole new level of fitness, and was one of the defining reasons my diet became that much more healthy. for a long time, i worked out without a sound knowledge of what i was doing. sure i was gettin results, but going out smoking and drinking after a workout was being counterbeneficial to all my hard work. from people at this site, and through my own research, i came to a new understanding of the sport and the importance of diet. ive made changes to my lifestyle that i hope to keep up across the rest of my days, and hope i can share what i know with others so they can come to the same realization that i have.. the importance of a healthy lifestyle.:dumbbell: |

I was actually the exact opposite.....my elementry school P.E teacher woudl fus at me, why I hated playing sports, didn't wanan run at the "fun run"....I didn't like football, base ball........took karate for a few years....thats about as much a sport as I did. Even then I used my asthma as an excuse not to run....
Then in jr high....i tryed football......just wasn't me I was just the big fat kid..that "should be" playing football......I wrestled in 7th grade although I only wrestled one time, and lost......I was the only kid on the team that never wrestled, I was just a body on the team. 8th grade a lil better I learned I coudl win if i was more agressive.I was 15-1 High school was tramatic......I was not actually over the weight limit for my class......I was once again the fat freshman....so I eventually quiet wrestling, due to teasing and ragging by the senior members. That would be the last time I ever did a "guys sport" This was when I got into cheerleading.....at the same time I discovered weeightlifting....funny thing was both I was pretty good at it. I was in the elite bunch in highschool that could bench over 200 and squat over 300......big milestones in highschool. Now i'm into working out more than ever.....I read constantly on the subject, i'm always willing to help others....or be helped on the subject....now I still hate running but it tolerable.......fast food hurts my stomach....and leaves me more hungery than before I ate it..... growing up is a good title.......but I don't think I grew up per say.......more like "evolve" into somthing/somone better. -------------- gravity is not a law, only a obstacle |

Well I'm 31 yrs old and still haven't grown up (my kids can contest that I play more video games then they do). However, someday I will and when I do I want to be in the best shape of my life.
I was never big on sports in my early years either. Played basketball with my friends, even at 5'4" I actually got pretty good, because we played like every day for years. I was also a gymnast for 4 years...but grades were never good enough to compete (Texas "No Pass, No Play" Rule), and I wasn't good enough in gymnastics for the coach to push me on my grades so I was just there as a body and to get a grade. Did a little lifting with a friend in 11th grade and built a nice physique, was even benching almost 170 when I only weighed 125 at the time, unfortunately I didn't maintain it for the long haul (that was stupid). However here I am...deciding what I want/where I want to be when I grow up and trying to point my life more in the the direction I wish I would have gone. After I get this big step in my life squared away to where I can maintain a healthy lifestyle and feel better about myself. I'm heading back to school to get that much needed degree. Then we'll see if I'm all grown up yet...probably won't be...can't see me going into Toys R Us and not having more fun then my kids going away any time soon. |
