I'm looking to cut some fat around my waist and add some lean muscle to my frame. Any supplements that assist in helping this process that would be recommended?

There are plenty of things can do that, however most of them terrible for you in so many ways. Your best bet is lower the carbs, up the protein and do some low intensity cardio. 50-60% of your max heart rate is good for your aerobic system, start going above that and you get yourself into an anaerobic state.

Proper diet, exercise and rest is the only way to achieve your goals, there are NO silver bullets to add muscle/cut fat, cept maybe a daily vitamin of sorts and that would only support what nutrients your diet is lacking.... :dumbbell:

Thanks!

So, no HIIT? Only moderate cardio?

Also, how low should I keep the carbs? I'm 215 now. I'm really not looking to lower my weight, I just want to cut the fat and build some lean muscle. I have heard its impossible to bulk and cut simultaneously, but I'm not looking to bulk, I'm looking to add lean muscle while cutting some fat. Is that possible? What is the best approach? Just low carbs high protein? How high on the protein?

Also, while I accept that there are no silver bullets, aside from diet and exercise, perhaps there are products that expedite the process a little that aren't unhealthy?

sure, read into fish/flax/hemp oils you can take that will help with many areas for example

Fish oil - Helps inflamation in muscles and joints, helps speed the recovery process of muscle building

Does wonders for your cholesterol, hdl's, Ldl's , your heart and cardio vasuclar system

Helps protect against heart attacks/disease/strokes and improves brain funtions and help with depression and so on to name a few....

FLAX OIL ---Just look at this list of facts and studies of what Flax Seed Oil can and may accomplish:

- Research shows low incidence of breast cancer and colon cancer in populations that have high amounts of lignan in their diet. Flax is 100 times richer in lignan than most whole grains.

- Studies show that Omega-3 fatty acids help lower cholesterol and blood triglycerides, and prevent clots in arteries, which may result in strokes, heart attacks and thromboses.

- Helps protect the body against high blood pressure, inflammation, water retention, sticky platelets and lowered immune function.

- Shortens recovery time for fatigued muscles after exertion.

- Increases the body's production of energy and also increases stamina.

- Accelerates the healing of sprains and bruises.

- Eases weight loss in people afflicted with obesity.

- Stimulates brown fat cells and increases the metabolic rate making it easier to burn off fat.

- Improves the absorption of Calcium.

- Strengthens finger and toenails.

- Can improve eyesight and perception of colors.

- Can often improve the function of the liver.

- Can relieve the side effects and stop development of many forms of cancer.

- Can relieve some cases of Asthma.

- Helpful in the treatment of Eczema, Psoriasis, and Dandruff.

- Can relieve the symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis. It can relieve the symptoms of Diabetes Mellitus.

- Can alleviate some allergies.

- Helps prevent Atherosclerosis (the accumulation of fatty deposits inside the blood vessels, especially the large and medium-sized arteries, that many people experience during the aging process).

- Lowers high blood pressure in Hypertension sufferers.

- Has been scientifically proven to treat some cases of depression.

- Can improve the mental function of many old age pensioners.

- Can help in the treatment of Multiple Sclerosis.

- Has been proven to improve the behavior of Schizophrenics.

- Can relieve some cases of Premenstrual

I would only do HIIT on non workout days and would read into a Protein supplement such as WHEY, that should get you thinking right...

In order to burn your calories and build some muscle you should research these 2 topics on-line - calorie counting and the zig-zag method of caloric intake.

As for what I said about low intensity cardio, I appologize, that was a half-assed answer. You are absolutley right about HIIT. Reasons being...

- Efficiency. You get a better workout in a shorter period of time than you do with those 30-minute to hour-long treadmill walks.

- Intensity. Because the intensity level is raised - even for a short time - you encourage your body to keep its muscle mass.

- Higher metabolism. It has been shown that interval training allows your body to continue to burn fat for up to 24 hours after your workout. This is apparently due to the higher intensity and/or the "shock to your system" of the repeated "hard-easy-hard-easy" cycle.

- Portability. Interval training can be done with several different types of equipment, even no equipment at all, and just about anywhere. Even a simple program of sprinting and walking will work.

bill06... Good info on the oils! I will copy and paste that in my own files. If you don't mind me asking, where did you get that extensive list? Just stuff you've picked up along the way or do you have a good reference for it?

i google everything bro, we are very lucky to have such great info just seconds away from us, and unlike my Gold edition Encyclopedia britanica thats got more dust on it than my treadmill used to, its fun to use.....

I have alot of free time at the moment and really enjoy learning stuff right now, when i was younger i didnt want to learn anything unless it was a football playbook, or a cheerleaders measurements and phone number ...

Anyways, you can also use the fitbuddy search feature at the bottom of every page here at freetrainers, theres been a buttload of info shared here before us, us it to your liking and good luck....

I google alot too, and also have plenty of free time lately, been laid off for roughly 2 months so I've been creating my own word files on various health, fitness and nutrition related topics. This way I can add to them or create new ones when I come across something I don't yet have.

I hear ya on learning more now than the younger years. As for fitbuddy, I was unaware that it was internal, and comprised of all previous posts. Thanks again.

Marine sources of EFA's are much better than vegetarian sources. ALA is the parent of EPA and DHA, and in vegetarian sources this must be broken down by the body and actually add a molecule to elnogate it and make it useful in the EPA and DHA form which your body 'wants'. This is not done well in most cases, in fact very badly by most. EPA and DHA are what you are after in your EFA's, and flaxseed unfortunately is not a good source.

so the fish oils would be the better choice, along with a proper amount of fish in our diets BB1 ?
