Medium grip chin/pull up. Doing a wide grip will not necessarily give you wide lats.
Try doing negative chin ups until you can build your strength for chin ups. Work up to 30 second negatives, and then start practicing isometric holds, and you will be doing chins like a pro before you know it. Trust me, its worth the effort to learn. There is no other upper body exercise like the weighted chin.

I just realized that that last sentence could be taken the wrong way. What I meant was there is no other upper body exercise as effective at building strength and hypertrophy as the chin

you could also build up lat strength using the lat pulldown. same mechanism, but you can build up resistance if you can't quite do bodyweight yet. and i emphasize the yet. i prefer chins personally by a long shot.

Not exactly the same mechanism. Yes, works some of the same muscles, but not as much, and its a closed chain exercise on a machine. Yes, it will build up strength, but not as effectively as negative chin ups.

I can attest for those negatives. Thanx wrestler for that suggestion in my post about chins. I can barely lift my arms today because of them. They work lol.

Any time, glad my advice went over well.

Medium grip is just holding at shoulder width.
A negative chin up is done by bringing your body over the bar with assistance (chair, jumping, etc) and then SLOWLY lowering yourself, resisting the urge to just fall as long as you can, and lowering as slowly as possible.
