I am wanting to find out the rules I guess on eating and drinking before working out. Cardio and weight workouts. Types of food and amonts and time. BTW, I am also trying to lose weight. Thanks

i do early am cario on an empty stomach, or with some sort of protein in me. The protein without the carbs will minimize the insulin response and allow you to mobilize fat while providing amino acids to prevent muscle breakdown. take in some carbs afterwards to replenish your glycogen stores.
as for weight training, i typically take in some carbs about half an hour to an hour before my workout, so that i have some energy to run off of. after my workout, i take protein (ie shake, since liquid will be used faster than food), and within an hour of the end of my workout, make sure to get some carbs into me as well. you only need about 10g of protein at the most after exercise, contrary to the popular belief that more is better.

I'm not a huge fan of doing any type of training on an empty stomach; just don't like the possibility of going catabolic or hypoglycemic.
Within an hour of lifing, I take in some protein and low GI carbs to get me through. Post-workout, I take in whey protein with high GI carbs in a 2:1 ratio (carbs to protein). The carbs repleish glycogen stores, while allowing the body to spare the protein to start repairing tissue.

I think the two are very different.
With cardio, you are going to get a lot of bang for your buck on an empty stomach - at least I do.
I don't really look at lifting as a cardio or a fat loss approach. Typically we do it to get stronger or bigger, right? I definitely ensure I have more than enough nutrients in my body to supply my muscles with everything they could possibly want during/after a routine. I work too hard not to.
To Rev's point, and I think he's right on, there is a health risk of doing anything vigorious on an empty stomach. Know the facts and then make the decision you can live (hopefully) with.
