i was told by a friend that he does one set of whatever he does for that day and he does it as many times as he can until he cant do it anymore.. lets say for example
he does 180 benchpress. he does it until he cant anymore just to break down the muscle fiber. when he is done feeling soreness a few days later he will add 5 lbs and do it again. does this actually work? i was doing something similiar to this for a little while and it seemed like it was. its interesting to me because im not the one for a long workout. if i can get in and out of the gym in 30 minutes im happy. considering i have no one to work out with.

It will work, but I sure can say this...one will really look out of perportion and get tired of going to the gym very fast!
Thats one of the reasons we split things up.

well im sure you can split up the work out routines. but i was just wondering mostly how effective this is compared to doing say like 3-5 sets of 10-12 reps

The problem with that lies herein...to properly work a muscle, you have to inflict fiber damage to induce growth. In the beginning, one set to failure after warmup may indeed do the job. But as we become intermediate to advanced, this will no longer hold true.

I agree with bb1, as you progress you will need more and more to damage muscle fibers. When I 1st started working out,I could do 4 sets on bench of say 180 for 12 reps apiece and be sore for 2 weeks. Now I have to do 5 to 6sets of the same weight, same reps to fill anything.
