Definitions please??

This may be a stupid question, but I am having trouble getting clarification on what exactly anabolic, catabolic and metabolic mean. I see these words being used all the time on this site.

I think anabolic means muscle building state and catabolic means the break down of muscle. I have no idea about metabolic.

Could someone clarify for me.

metabolic refers to the state of metabolism, which is just what your body does, it is how many calories you are burning, all of the processes going on in your body 0 existing. When people talk about a metabolic state they are usually referring to conditions that boost your metabolism causing you to burn a higher amount of calories.
You are right, anabolic refers to a positive muscle building state and catabolic refers to the break-down of muscle tissue.
