I am about to begin the mass program and I noticed it contained dealifts. I hurt myself trying to do them in 9th grade and I haven't tried them since. Should I attempt a light weight from about knee high or find something to replace them?

Have you read the instructions here at ft on how to safely perform them? do so.. I think that you will be alright wth light weight until you get the form correct, then you can move on to heavier weights without injuries.

Where rev8ball? :)

Thanx, Do you think it would be better for me to set the barbell on something to raise it(about knee height) and also should I wear a weight belt?

Hmm..

if you are afraid of injury even at low weight, then yes, raise the bar to avoid injuring your lower back. And in that case, you should wear a belt as well, even though it is recommended that you wear one only when you go heavy.

After each rep of a deadlift should you return to the same starting position? Meaning legs bent weight on the ground.
Thanks!
I am bending my legs and using them during the lift and am almost placing the weight on he ground after EACH REP. I see so many different ways the deadlift is performed at the gym.

I tried deadlifts today for the first time. My back pain was not bad but I still did not feel comfortable. I kept hitting my knees with the bar. I am unsure of how fast I should do the motion. I see some people who basicly DROP the weight and the whole gym vibrates. I was unable to find a weight belt and also unable to raise the bar. I think Im just too tall to do deadlifts. My back hurts and my knees hurt...I may need to find a replacement exercise.

Can anyone give me a full workout to replace the deadlifts? The barbell rows don't hurt too bad, so I can do those (but I prefer the cable row). I may go back to my old back workout(pull downs, cable and dumbell rows, shrugs...)

It's kinda hard to replace a good exercise like deadlifts. But, sounds like you need to strengthen your lower back before going very heavy on this exercise. You can do good mornings with moderate weight. Yes, you use your legs to assist in the lift.
