would it be bad to work out with a cold, or would it be better to wait

It's best to wait and rest. When one works out the resistance to virus and infection drops and can make things worse.
If you are working out in a gym it wouldn't be fair to others in the gym.

I respectfully disagree with carivan. Working out is OK, just don't over do it; now is not the time to try to set new personal records. Working out will get the blood flowing and it WILL make you feel better. Increase the amount of water, protein, and vitamins in your diet. I would recommend glutamine supplementation (10 grams a day), but its not a must.

I personally don't think a public gym is the place for a cold or other contagious ailments. You are spreading your germs to every bench, handle and piece of equipment you touch. Those things will in turn be touched by dozens of people after you and unless you are carrying a bottle of disenfectant around with you and cleaning everything after you use it, chances are someone else will get your cold and not appreciate it. If you have to work out, do it at home until you are over it. Sorry if that sounded preachy, it's my healthcare training coming out.
